Reminds me of my Hildi, really she is hideously ugly isn't she. And with flockmates Gingersnap and Evie. Not the greatest pics but the prettiest of my silkies.
My silkie roo has the exact same colouring. I got him as a chick and he was supposed to be a blue--then I figured he looked more like a splash until he got a bit older and got that brown/red colouring (mainly on his neck).
This is a pic of him last year--in this pic the colouring doesn't show up well, and it is far more pronounced now.
I'll try to get a good pic later and post.
Here are couple of pics I took today.
He's not nearly as fluffy as he used to be--a run in last fall with a couple of strange dogs that ambled into my yard and decided to play tug-of-war with him took care of a lot of his feathers. :-(
I thought he was dead for sure (when I ran out there there was nothing left but a large pile of fluff!) but he showed up two days later, somewhat naked, but alive and well!
He takes really good care of the two silkie hens I acquired a couple of weeks ago.
Is there a name for this colouring, or is he just a crazy mutt?
There are around 6 standard colors in the silkie breed with a few more being worked on like Cuckoo. Most breed true to color except for blue which gives only blue, black & splash offspring of which all black & splash breed true to their color. If you cross two different colors apart from the Black/blue/splash, you get a rainbow of strange colored birds. They are still pure silkie but their colors have no names (or too many with everyone renaming their odd colored birds). You can't breed two standard colors & get a whole bunch of other standard colors from the cross. You get a mixing & blending of the colors.
