Sol clamped his mouth shut, swallowing welling emotions as the idea of a life without Tobias began to play through his mind. He couldn't stay here. He couldn't leave Tobias. Impulsive reactions raced through his mind. Sol's gaze turned slowly towards the narrow passage out of the cavern. He took a sharp, shaking breath. And then he bounded towards cavern exit, his talons spraying rocks in his wake.
Eclipse started after Sol and then paused, turning back to Shard and nudging the Icewing towards Sunspot. The SolarWing skidded to a stop, tossing sand in every direction as he finally let panicked tears streak down his nose. He scanned the dunes, then wheeled back towards the cavern, scrambling up the rocky mountain side. Sol could feel his shoulder throb, the pain jarring as he climbed over a tall boulder, daring to jump to the next mossy ledge before he gazed out at the horizon, his heart pounding terribly. The red dragon swallowed hard, then continued his climb, trying to get his wild thoughts under control- but Tobias was all he had. Tobias was all he knew. Horrid tears welled yet again, and Sol settled himself on a jagged ledge, coughing back gasping half-sobs as he sought to catch his shallow breath.
This literally was his worst nightmare. How could this be happening.
How could this be happening.
"Keep an eye on her please," she said, shooting the Solarwing a pleading look before whirling and bolting out of the cavern without waiting for a response.
"Sol, wait!"
She was pretty sure the Solarwing couldn't hear her at that moment. She watched him skid out onto the sand in a panic and stop, raking his gaze over the rolling desert before whipping around and launching himself onto the rocky slope surrounding the cavern entrance.
Eclipse dug her talons into the sand to slow herself as she exited the cave, almost sliding too far and losing her balance as she tried to turn mid-skid.
"Sol, stop!"
He still couldn't hear her. He was already halfway up the slope, scrambling and leaping up the rocky incline. She had no idea what he was doing, but if he ended up hurting himself, she knew she wouldn't be able to keep from blaming herself.
Eclipse cursed under her breath as she unfurled her wings, knowing she would probably regret what she was about to do.
She lept at the slope with a massive pound of her wings, her claws grinding on the stones as she lept again, beating her wings to propel herself upward, ignoring the pain that twinged through her right shoulder every time she did.
Sol finally stopped on one of the uneven and somewhat questionable ledges jutting out of the slope, his chest heaving with what Eclipse could only guess were choked sobs. Steaming tears trailed down his crimson scales, evaporating around his neck or dripping over the sides of his snout.
Eclipse heaved herself onto the ledge, suppressing a gasp from the exertion. For a moment, the two of them just stood there panting and staring out toward the horizon, the same horrible dread hanging in both their minds. Eclipse finally paced slowly to the Solarwings side and gently rested a cool, silver talon on his heated shoulder, keeping her gaze focused on the ocean of sand, barely noticing her wing slightly brushing his. She wished she knew what to say to comfort him or to try and reassure him, but she wasn't convinced herself that Tobias had actually escaped. The last thing she wanted was to lie to Sol right now, and that was the last thing he needed. So she said nothing, letting the silence stretch on and hoping that her presence was enough to at least calm Sol down a little.
