Rolling his eyes silently, Ajax paced over to Alicanto. He slid his body under the CloudWing’s wing, feeling very uncomfortable.

Arya laid back on the black sofa, her black hair spilling around her head. She tossed c a pen up in the air, catching it as it descended. Toss. Catch. Toss. Catch. She sighed.
She heard a thump and the rustling of wings. That would be Cochineal.
The tall goldenrod yellow dragon stepped inside the large apartment the two shared, his wings buzzing.
“Any news?” Arya asked, sitting up. Cochineal took off his round glasses, rubbing a speck of dust off with a cloth.
“COCHINEAL.”
The hybrid looked up. “They got away, but not without pursuit,” he said smoothly, putting his glasses back on and smoothing back his crest. “There were injuries and losses but now both transports are headed to the second Checkpoint.”
Arya breathed a sigh of relief, falling back.
“But- Arya,” Cochineal continued. “I think our situation might be comprom-“
On cue, the doorbell rang. A normal occurrence.
Arya whirled to look at Cochineal with wide eyes. The SandWing hybrid narrowed his own eyes, glancing at the door. “What-“ Arya asked.
Cochineal put a claw to his lips in a “shh” gesture, tilting his head towards the door. His tail barb curled into a defensive position.
Arya slid off the sofa, padding across the wood floor. The doorbell rang again, accompanied by agressive door knocking that rang through the house.
“Who’s there?” Arya asked suspiciously, narrowing her eyes.
Suddenly the door burst open and many dangerous, official looking people spilled in. Dangerous, official looking people with guns.
“Aye, geeze chill!” yelped Arya, putting her hands up.
Oh no.
OH NO.
This was not good. This was not good AT ALL.
Cochineal was right. They’d been discovered.
The leader of the attack team stepped forward. “You, Arya Campbell, are under arrest for suspected undermining of Scorpion Den Authority, conspiring against the government, and helping to smuggle dragons out of the city.”
Aryas mouth felt dry. She took a deep breath, forcing her heartbeat to slow. “I have done no such thing,” she said cooly. “Where is your evidence?”
“Your computers were searched. We have had cams on you for awhile. Did you really think you were that secretive?”
Crap.
Behind her, Cochineal took a step forward. “Stay there,” the leader hissed, brandishing his gun. Cochineal stopped moving, saying nothing.
“Even if I did do any of those things, you couldn’t stop me. You know this place is sick,” Arya snarled. She was really shooting all her shots at once. But she knew, they both knew, that if they were arrested, ir was over.
“Bold of you,” said the attack team leader condescendingly. “What makes you think that?”
Arya smiled. “Have you ever heard of that tear gas that done HiveWings can create?”
She leapt out of the way, rolling on the ground and standing up again, as Cochineal twisted his tail barb towards their attackers. A steaming, hissing clear spray shot out of it, causing the attack team to duck, covering their faces with their arms, shields, couch cushions for some reason.
Arya leapt onto Cochineal’s back and the dragon hurried to the flight launch “garage” that opened the side of their apartment to the city, leaping out. His wings flicked open and Cochineal began flying away hard and fast, the thrumming of his wings thundering in Aryas ears. She heard roars and looked down. A group of NightWings shot into the air after them. Double crap.
“Moons, I hate doing that acid thing,” she heard Cochineal mutter, as he veered to dive closer to the ground. Arya and Cochineal lived in the “rich” side of the Scorpion Den, where dingy skyscrapers rose out of the ground, tightly packed and foreboding. The atmosphere felt suffocating.
But today, the closeness of everything benifited the two fugitives. Cochineal’s HiveWing wings made him much more agile than the NightWings, and he dove into the thick of the city.
“If we can get out into the desert, we can hope it’ll be too hot for them to chase us at such high speeds,” Arya called, crouching low to Cochineal’s spine.
“Too hot for you too,” he replied, glancing back before pulling a tight barrel roll manuever to avoid a volley of bullets.
“We don’t have a better choice, do we?” Arya yelled. She heard Cochineak give a long suffering sigh.
Eventually they burst out into the sprawling outer Scorpion Den, filled with ramshackle houses. The sun was bright and hot, beating down instantly on Arya’s back. When she looked back again, more hunter NightWings were behind them, many with armed riders.
Arya could see the wall of the Scorpion Den a few miles ahead, and golden dunes stretching past that.
The wall….
“Crap! The turrets!” She growled. “The turrets will shoot us down the moment we cross that wall.”
“Oh, ye of little faith,” said Cochineal sarcastically. “I’m fast. Faster than them, faster than the blazing turrets.”
There was no arguing with the guy.
Suddenly a red shape loomed in front of them, talons outstretched. A SkyWing, with an armored rider.
“You have GOT to be kidding me,” muttered Arya.
Rather than swerve to avoid her, Cochineal slammed into the red SkyWing, plunging his venomous tail into her abdomen. The dragon shrieked, slashing at Cochineals throat and leaving a long red gash along the black blotched scales on the side of his neck. Cochineal shoved her away with a hiss, continuing their mad dash to freedom.
Arya crept forward along his spine. “Leave it,” Cochineal snapped. Arya pulled her hand back. “Sorry.”
The NightWings were gaining, spreading out to flank Cochineal.
“Up it is,” the HiveWing hybrid said, the whirr of his wings rising in a crescendo as they began a nearly vertical ascent. Arya could feel that he was tiring.
But so were the dragons pursuing. The heat wore on them, the NightWing’s black scales absorbing more than Cochineals yellowish ones. Slowly they were falling behind.
Boom.
“And that will be the turrets,” said Arya. She could see a flaming projectile big enough to kill any dragon flying towards them. Cochineal dove and Arya could hear it whistle above their heads before exploding with a noise that left her ears feeling fuzzy.
The flight sequence that followed made Arya feel very, very ill. But eventually Cochineal evened out, flying fast and low.
“Is- is that it?” Arya asked.
“No.” Cochineal responded.
“Of course,” Arya said sarcastically.
“They’re gonna keep after us, but I’m hoping we can meet up with the transports at the Second Checkpoint. We have nowhere else to go.” Cochineal continued, a little quieter.
Nowhere else to go.
It sounded so final. But it was true. And they were free, for now.

Alicanto silently barred his teeth as Ajax approached, but he couldn't muster a warning growl from his parched throat. He grudgingly allowed the hybrid to slip beneath his wings, his warm scales rubbing uncomfortably against Alicanto's matted feather.
It took a lot of coordinating and standing and stopping and swaying between the two of them in just the few short paces to the river's edge, and Alicanto already felt dizzy and exhausted within that little amount of time. He dropped onto the rocky bank, shaking Ajax off with his wing as he did and letting out a deep, shuddery breath once he was finally several steps backwards and away. The Cloudwing dipped his head clumsily and slowly to the water's surface, watching Vel suspiciously from the corner of his eye.

"We have to leave soon." Vel said, looking away as to not make the CloudWing feel awkward. "How do you feel? What hurts? Don't lie, CloudWing."

Alicanto turned to face the Rainwing, his head swaying a little from the movement and he leveled a cold stare on her. He wasn't entirely sure why he was mad at her.
"Why the rush," he said slowly, watching her closely. "I don't really feel like traveling right now, ya know?" There was an underlying note of sarcasm to his words, and a jagged smile flicked on the corner of his mouth.

Vel scowled. "I'm leaving, and you have no choice, so stop playing this like you have cards. You're out, I'm in." She rolled her eyes. "Besides, we can't survive off rotten fruit and shriveled up plants for long." Vel steeled her gaze. "What do you feel like? Does your head hurt?"

"Rotten fruit?"
Alicanto's snout curled in disgust, suddenly unsure of the horrible taste still settled in the back of his mouth and over his tongue. Now that he thought of it, "rotten fruit" didn't sound too far off from how he would have described the taste.
"Is that what you shoved down my throat while I was asleep?" He ignored Vel's questions again, trying to avoid looking as vulnerable as possible.

"Yes."
Vel snatched a flat stone from the river, flipping it in her talon.
"And obviously, maybe unfortunately, it has given you the energy to talk, so now I'm regretting it."
Vel swiveled the rock in her claws, then cocked her arm back, nailing Alicanto directly atop the head with the flat side of the stone.
"Stop ignoring my question." A smile crept onto her expression. "What. Hurts."
