Off Flavors in Eggs? Wood Ash, Straw, Broccoli? What could cause it?

Thanks for the relies everyone. I will try removing broccoli from their diet and see what happens.

Currently I am paying off all my coop/run building help with eggs and I keep having to warn folks that there may be a "bad broccoli" egg in the carton!

I don't know about the broccoli

I give my 5 hens a head of broccoli and a large cabbage head every day and the eggs taste just fine. In fact they're delicious!

I also find this strange. I give cabbage and broccoli nearly every day to offset boredom and lack of ranging in the snow. Of the 45 or so eggs we've gotten this year, none have tasted "off" or "fishy".

Is there a source that I can read for the "cabbage family causes fishy eggs" comment?

Thanks!

I feed all the things mentioned in the other posts and haven't had any off flavor in my eggs. Maybe there is something with one of the birds since it isn't all of the eggs.

Yeah, I'm thinking it is just one bird laying these eggs because there is only one or two per dozen like this.

I thought it was just one hen being a broccoli hog, but now I wonder?

Maybe I should post in the Diseases/Injuries/cures section to see if anyone can think of a NON diet related reason for stinky eggs?

Aspergus can give weird smells and flavors to things. And it is usually just left on the kids' plates. I wouldn't be giving it to my hens.

Sooo, how long do I need to wait after cutting out broccoli for the nastiness to go away?

It's been ten days and still I have one out of every dozen eggs (from 11 hens) that is fishy and weird.

At this point, all they are getting is layer pellets and scratch. They are less than happy.

Could there be a health problem and not a diet problem causing this?
