Tell him in your sweetest voice, that the outdoor work helps to balanceout the more mundaine inside work. After all once boredom settles in then you're likely to forget little things, like not burning his dinners, and washing his drawers,
Dug this out, don't know if you've read it before:

I'm afraid we do not have sustainability in common. All the things (besides the kids) that give me joy just annoy him. What I did tell him was that the garden and chickens are a "sanity saver". And I am no longer a perfect housekeeper. I used to be, having a cleaner twice a month gave me the opportunity to spend QUALITY time with Shane and Emily when they were little. To run Emmy to Tea Party Class, speech therapy, tutoring, Mommy & Me, Religious School... Housework is thankless, tedious, never ending and mind numbing. I was up front about it when we were courting. We'd do it together, hire it out, or it wouldn't get done. After we got Sarah, and 16 months later Hannah the workload quadrupled, we discovered that Sarah lived her life on overdrive, Emmy still needed support, Hannah was a newborn and I was 45 years old, ever more resentful.
I'm trying to maintain, but like I told my husband...this isn't a marriage. We're roommates with kids. I'm working on it but some days are definitely better than others.
