I think I can join that one too thru ancestors in the war.

I've been informed by my new family that they fought on the "right side" in the "war of northern agression"......

Believe me that war is still going on here. When I married my DH (he's from Philadelphia) the local sheriff knocked on my mothers door asking her why she let a d#%$! yankee marry me! Lets for get the fact that my mother is from Brooklyn, NY., My father is from Illinois, I was born in Massachusetts, My brother in Erie, PA, my other brother in Buffalo, NY. and the only true redneck my sister here in Georgia. LOL

Yes... it amazes me. It also amuses me... but I'm twisted like that.

DDH has a distant family member buried in Andersonville (civil war prisoner camp) http://www.nps.gov/seac/andearch.htm
DH and I go every so often to visit his grave. I know many think its strange that I would go visit a family member that I never actually knew but I think its strange not to go and pay respects to someone that everyone seems to have forgotten about.

I would talk with people from your local chapter. Each one is different. Some of those ladies are so "proud" of their heritage, people call them snooty. Others are a party group and others yet are just get togethers.

The lady in our local chapter sent me this:
"Hello Rachel,

Our chapter has received an inquiry from our national headquarters concerning DAR membership. After checking for you on locations that would be convenient for you I do see that you are much closer to our chapter than any other existing chapter location.

Any chapter receiving an inquiry is always very happy to welcome a new member. Our chapter is fairly new and would be excited to have someone interested in taking the time to visit our meetings. We are a busy chapter with many different projects and would love any additional input in advice or help with any or all that would be in their area of interest. One of our projects is in November "veterans cookie day" when we bake and distribute approximately fifty packages of cookies to veterans in various communities in our area, another project of ours is to purchase flags that have been flown over our nations capital and award them to people who have helped in a worthy patriotic endeavor. This is also the second year of our very successful Adopt-a-Highway project on Hwy. 71 just north of Bemidji.

The age range of members in Star of the North is quite varied with the youngest being twenty and the oldest being somewhere in her seventies. There are a lot of in between ages, but we all enjoy each others input and contribution to our chapter and regardless of your age or interests we would love to have you join us in our service to our area.

Thank you for your inquiry and I hope you can join us for meetings and please let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Sharon"

Which makes me think that its not what I thought it was. I am interested in it for the family history... not because I want to be some den mother.

Sounds like a service organization heavy on the service. Do you have the time, interest, and energy to get involved?

Andersonville was so terrible... *shudders*

Its not weird to me at all that you do that. its respectful. I plan to stop by several ancestors' gravse on my next few road trips.
