I wish we had a reasonable processing place near here. There's one about 40 minutes away and they charge $4.50 per bird to process, with a minimum of 30 birds and they'll only do CornishX.

So am I! And I need to get new brakes on my car, BADLY, which I don't have money for... AND I'm paying daycare 5 different ways right now which is sucking me dry.

if we were close, I'd send DH to fix the brakes on your car, super easy to do.

Did you look at this:

Seriously, I could stand at the counter and eat an entire smoked chicken if Tim didn't beat me to it

So did you do cornish x or just extra cockerels?

I am thinking, maybe get straight run of something I want and then eat the cockerels. But the kids might disown me.

We got a roo special from Cackle. 100 roo's for like 40 cents a bird. BO, RIR, BR, and WR mix. NOT recommended. They are stringy, even tho they were only about 4 months old when we butchered.

I don't like the carcass on your average dual purpose bird - it takes longer to grow them to processing size, they're skinny looking once processed, high bone:meat ratio, small breasted and tougher. I guess I'm just used to the Cornish X from the grocery.

Aw thanks Algea, I actually have a super neighbor who will do it most of the time, but he's been busy farming lately, and he said that the front brakes on my nissan are harder than normal and will run much more $$$. He did the back ones a couple of months ago for $50, but the front ones are going to be around $275. I also need to get the suspension linkages in the front replaced and a belt done....

yeah, we're so glad we did it, we learned a lesson, and the birds are still edible but not as enjoyable. We'll for sure do cornishx from here on out.

I told DH that when we get them HE has to take care of them. I've never been so freaked out as at the fair this year seeing a processing sized cx all half naked and fat... unnatural! That's all they raised when he was little so he's used to it.
