Don't die, Batty! I'm looking forward to Shelbyville May 12th! You gotta be there
This morning I went out the backdoor to go check on the broody hens and lock up the coop. As I stepped out my peripheral vision went off and I turned my head to make eye contact with a red fox standing about 10 feet away. After a moment he loped down the yard and around the corner of my coop, heading for the woods more than the coop itself. He loped calmly, not the balls-out running I would've expected from a 'wild' animal.
I walked to the coop, taking a wide angle so that I could see the area I expected him to have passed through. He was standing in the clearing where the new house is being built, waiting for me! We made eye contact again, and then he turned and sashayed off to wherever red foxes go during the day. There's also a pond and geese in the direction he was heading.
It was a neat way to start the week!!
I'd much rather have foxes than coyotes (seen one of those in my yard before too). Mr. Fox looked healthy, and must've been visiting the other neighbors to have come from the direction of the cul-de-sac. DH noticed that the neighbor's cats were all on her car, staring at me. I pointed out that they were probably all staring at the fox as well. He thought about it and concurred. I'll bet he doesn't let the cats out after dark any longer....
Anyway, the chickens are fine. My coop and runs are built like Fort Knox, so Mr. Fox doesn't scare me. It just means I need to be really careful about the usual things: Locking up runs and being outside when everyone free-ranges.
I wish the weather was like yesterdays weather and in the 70's reaching 80* so I didn't have to worry about those lil baby squirrels out there.
I know I have to leave it alone but I can't help it...I wanna go out and look....it's been an hour now. I hope she spotted them.
I have them in the washcloth...not layed out but cupped in it so the sides are up because I was hoping that would at least keep in some of the heat they had from staying under the heat lamp last night. But maybe I should have layed it out straight so mama could see them better? But then they could have wiggled off it... oh, I don't know.... I don't know....
Ok, here comes a peek of the sun out of all these dark dismall clouds...ok, lets have a warm up here....come on Mr. Sunny Sun....you can do it!!!
