I suspect because corn is wind pollenated, so you remove tassels to keep your seed stock pure (an especial concern because of monsato's seed police who are suing when thier gmo corn pollutes your corn as IP theft),

Because there are 3 or 4 companies in the area that hire the kids to detassle for summer.

He's working in a Pioneer field this year. It's fun....
