Only in Alaska could you do such a cool school project.
the teacher gets permits from Fish & Game. The beavers are harvested from areas that are over populated and need to be thinned out. They get 28 permits, one for each kid in class. The kids hike out over hill and dale, set the traps, hike back out to regularly check said traps, and carry the carcasses back to school. The meat gets donated to local mushers, after the kids disect it (no frogs or baby pigs in our biology class) and then they stretch and tan the hides. They study the skeletons and learn tons about nature while they are hiking back and forth. It's a pretty amazing experience.
They also get to process a moose, but only one a year. The same teacher gets a road kill to offset the grocery bill for our field trips. The 7th and 8th graders go on week long field trips to Kennicott and Seldovia. Teacher gets the road kill moose, hangs it at his house and then brings it in and one of the school parents who is a butcher by trade comes in and teaches the kids meat carving 101.
My kids have a healthy respect for the meat on their dinner table.
