Just finished up for the day. I am not sure what possesed me, but I decided to move the mulch AND till the coop/run.
Do you all know what caliche is? Its a type of clay that occurs 18 inches under the soil in AZ. It is very much like a 3 inch layer onf concrete.
That's what the chicken poop turns to inthe sun here. The entire top 2 inches of the run was petrified poop, shavings, hay, sand, and tossed feed. That layer was dry and sooooo hard. After that, the dirt was almost wet from this winter's rain.
This years' fly problem had already started---and I figured if I could dry out the coop & run, I would nip some of the fly breeding in the bud. BY FAR the worst spot was the meaties pen, but I have been wetting it down to keep them cool. I had already spread a ton of DE (like 4 gallon scoops) but it wasnt helping.
So I tilled the entire area, one shovelful at a time. Now the chickens are in scratchscratchpeckpeck heaven, but my left buttcheek has never been so sore.
Gonna lay down for a while.
