Don't be so sure. My older cats were very set in their ways, but when Jezebel joined them she really spunked them up after they got used to her. It was fun watching the tomcat play like a kitten again, and see him cleaning Jezzie's head (his tongue was almost as big as her face back then). And my 'houseplant' cat (cause all she did was eat drink and sleep in the sunshine) regained some weight on the kitten chow and had a new interest in life as well.

But the best part was that when Puff-n-Stuff and Scooter ventured down the Rainbow Bridge, they had taught Jezzie how to comfort me and be a good companion. And although Jezebel was not amused when Calliope came to live with us, they play all day now and Jezzie never wanders through the house crying anymore. And Jezzie is teaching Callie about being a good companion.

If I cry, Jezzie comes and pushes against me and makes me pet her. She learned that from Scooter. Puff-n-Stuff would throw toys at me when I was sad.

DH already knows that when Jezzie decides its time for the Rainbow Bridge, we will be getting a kitten for Callie to teach and be rambunctious with....

Ohhhh, don't be telling me stuff like that. My boys are houseplants too, and I thought they'd be annoyed as heck if I brought a kitten home.

Keep the baby locked away from them for about 24-48 hours so that they can hear and smell but not get at it. They will be curious as heck by the time they get to meet the baby.

Give it another 24-48 hours for them to adjust to the idea of having a newbie in their space.

And then the next 24-48 hours is them discovering that newbie is amusing to watch act like an idiotic space-cadet. And newbie eats yummy food that they can steal.

Before you know it, the oldsters are wondering if they can play the same silly kitten games.

Nothing is funnier than watching an old cat spaz around a toy like a kitten.

Puff never did spaz around the toy, but she always made sure she had a good spot to watch the frolic. And if the baby got too close Puff gave her a look that I'm sure a lot of school-teachers wish they could patent.

[must print pics for DH, Buddy and Joe] My DH is a real cat lover (big time) and he's afraid to stop by that office to see the kittens. In the past, before me, his household always had cats, and he had a couple of instances where a newcomer changed the dynamic and personalities of the existing cats in a bad way and they were never the same again. So he's very afraid to risk "losing" the love-fest that is the Buddy & Joe show.

That potential is there, of course, but can be minimized by careful introduction. That's why locking the baby in another room is helpful. It lets everyone get used to the concept and aromas, and become curious rather than immediately threatened.

I really do think introduction is the key to success.

[note to self: send Lori Cuddles's pic so she can test it on her DH]

He would look at it and say, "Oh lookie; BAIT!" and pretend he's gonna go fishing.

He still thinks we shoulda named Callie 'Bait'.
What's really cute is to see a so-called cat-hater on the floor with a flashlight, Callie crouched next to him, as they look under the dresser for her spider toy. It's adorable. He threatened divorce if I ever posted the pictures....
