Hey, instead of cutting off leaves, get a cheap paintbrush from the kids. Roam around the squash, painting the inside of each flower. When you've done them all go back to the plant you started with and paint it again. BINGO! Instant squash.
When we had the massive honeybee hive fail a few years ago I learned that trick and painted all the garden flowers on all the plants. Even had a different paintbrush for each. It really does work.
I was making tomato flowers 'kiss' each other when the mockingbird landed on my butt....
I used that trick last year, but I just took the male flowers off, peeled the petals off and brushed them on the female flowers. we had a lot of squash. I'm lazy this year and feel that nature should do its fair share.
I prefer the paintbrush so I don't have to touch any part of the plant. They make me itch worse than skeeters, so I only get up close and personal when its time to harvest.
