not kilt....just on hiatus...monkeys are always available

Had to go to bed last night. Exhausted from fighting off the dentist. If I had a nickel for every time she told me to relax, or open my mouth wider, she'd have had to pay ME for the visit.

When I went to take a shower Goldie was scarfing food to keep her millie playmate from getting it all. Millie girl was from a pen of 16 youngsters and she was quick to belly up to the food bar. At bedtime they were on a make-shift roost in the cage on my porch.
When I got up at 6am, Goldie was sprawled on the floor of the cage, dying. I moved her to a more private location and removed her leg band. She woke up a bit about that, and then went back to fading away. She'll be gone when I get home from work.

I picked the millie girl for 2 reasons: She's one I want to keep, and there was something a tad off about the way she was moving when I went to the pen. This morning it was clear she's not putting any weight on one foot, and hasn't been for a day or two. The hock on that side has mild crustation of crud, but is not worn away. So I guess milie gets to stay on the porch for a few days, and I'll have to grab HER a buddy from the youngster pen.

This evening I will bury Mama Blue (who's dying in the garage) and Goldie. I am not happy.

Tomorrow Mom comes to visit. It was clear last night she's packing her Opinions and bringing them as well. Mom has strong Opinions and she's not afraid to use them. If she just picked on me it would be tolerable (I'm used to it) but she tries to 'improve' DD. She thinks she's cute and funny. She's actually cutting and mean. We may have Words if it gets too bad. As it is, I've promised DD she can have a set of iPod earbuds for everytime things get ugly...

Thankfully, Mom doesn't bug me about my birds. She finds it 'amusing'. Especially since it drives DH nuts.

My computer locked up and shut down shortly after I logged on this morning. I find it amusing it will allow me to come here, and to FB if I don't play games. But if I visit sites I need for my actuall JOB it locks up and shuts down.

I would be totally miserable today except for one thing. I added water to the bator and heard a peep, saw a pip. A largish wave of black d'Uccles is on the way.

Hiatus over, probably kilt again.
Will look for monkeys as soon as I do a little actual work and get to the boring non-computer part of my day...

Mama Bean arrived last night as well. She stayed at the sister's house though. I am preparing for the inevitable OMG YOU HAVE A MILLION CHICKENS, HOARDER, HOARDER!! that will probably come out of her mouth. I did clean my house in preparation for her visit. Except for the extra bedroom. Do not go into the extra bedroom.

Did you guys see the hoarder thread? I'm not gonna lie, I am starting to feel like a hoarder...which means I am not one....but still, I have SO MANY chickens out there. Over a hundred. I am taking almost 30 to a sale this weekend. Keep your fingers crossed they actually sell. If they do, I will take another 20 or so to another sale on the 21st. I remember back in the day when I had 19. 19!! Or even back when I had 13. Oh the good ol days. I had to make a spreadsheet just to keep track of how many I have now and I keep noticing chickens I forgot to put on there.

It doesn't help that I have a ridiculous number of awesome broodies. I have a 6 shelf nesting unit in the coop. Broody central. 3 nests on top, 3 nests on bottom. I have a broody on the top right hand nest....2 or 3 stuffed into the bottom left nest, plus 1 in the botom middle. Top broody always gets off the nest in the morning to run outside and scream at everyone, poop, scratch, drink, etc. She is sitting on a nest of Olive Egger eggs......I noticed today once is broken open.

No baby.

So I sit and listen and here peeping coming from the middle bottom broody. Check under her and fine a cute little blue baby. Must have fallen off the top nest and got stolen by the bottom broody. These olive eggs were layed one at a time, every day for a week or so, so I expect a chick to hatch out every day or two LOL. I should have marked them and removed new ones and never got around to it. Ah well.

Anyone need a broody? They are part of my "downsize plan". 3 White leghorn/Jersey Giant hens. White with black spots. Less than a year old and going on their 2nd and 3rd times broody. Will sit in groups and "coparent" with other hens. Lay well when not broody. One is aggressive enough as a broody to jump on my shepherd mix and ride him 10 feet to get him away from her chicks.

Strangest cross ever. I hatched 5 last year. Jersey Giant rooster x White Leghorn hens. I kept 4 and gave 1 to a neighbor. Of my 4, 1 is blind in one eye. She is currently raising 4 chicks that are about 5 weeks old. Of the remaining 3, 2 coparented a batch of chicks when they were about 5-6 months old (Ridic!) and are now broody together AGAIN. The last 1 went broody a while back and I was able to break her. She is now broody again and is the one who stole the baby chick. She is doing great so far. Their cross gives them some decent size...they are a little bigger than my RIR hens.

One of these even successfully fought off a hawk attack with no injuries (other than a ripped saddle).

DON'T THEY SOUND LIKE THE PERFECT BROODIES? Anybody need a broody? LOL

Yeah, I know. I'm over my own childhood issues. But DD has enough of her own already, she doesn't need Mom bringing her more. It's hard to make that clear without a knock-down drag-out fight, though, and I don't have that kind of energy. Hence the bribe of earbuds, which DD goes through like water down a drain (sleeps in them).
DD said she'd rather spend time with her stepdad than my mother. That's a pretty powerful statement...

Sunday I'm taking Mom to see African Queen on the big screen. Yesterday was her birthday, and a month ago she listed only 2 things she 'really wanted' for her birthday. So I let sis & bro have those and am taking Mom to a movie and a weekend looooooong visit.
And oh joy and blassing I get to take her to shop for a COMPUTER. If she gets on BYC then I will have to go play with monkeys instead.

Morning.

Thank God its Thursday. If I can get thru the meeting with the lawyer my client sicked on us it will be a good day.

Reading this morning includes "Lose 5 lbs in 2 weeks!" and "How to lose 10 lbs in 5 weeks." which one seems more optimistic? Realistic? Chocolatistic?

I've been hitting the Tomato sandwiches pretty hard the past 2 weeks...I dont eat bread 90% of the time, and I can tell I've been eating a lot. Oi!

Will be on the lookout for Monkees...

DH likes to say I'm a hoarder. He watched some show: Lady had 340 cats and they let her keep 85. He didn't tell me I have too many chickens after the show, knowing that I have fewer chickens than the lady had cats. AND MY CHICKENS LIVE IN THE COOP!!

Have been there, done that, made my own spreadsheet, printed it, took it to the coop for a roll call and had to pencil in all the ones I'd missed. I'm about due for making that spreadsheet again!

I have 2 broodies already, and 2 more that are ready to 'help'. Find another sucker.. I mean TAKER...

Nella, we can compare mother visits later. If we survive!

Skip the diets. Break a tooth and live on yogurt and oatmeal.
Fix the tooth and you can't afford food and have to finish off the yogurt & oatmeal....

But wait until he doesn't lay any eggs for 3 months just to make sure.

Um, he already hasn't laid eggs for his entire life, Buffy.
