Re: brands. There are a million brands out there, but only a few actual manufacturers. A lot of units are the exact same equipment with a different label stuck on them.

Westinghouse, Trane, Lennox are all good brands. York is pretty decent. I personally would avoid Carrier; lots of advertising, inferior product IMO. All brands have their higher and lower end equipment; the lower end equipment usually has a different name on it but is made by the same manufacturer, and the differences may be minimal. Whatever you buy, make sure it comes with no less than a 10 year parts and labor warranty.
