and how is that goats escutcheion and medial suspensory ligament lookin? Looks like a pretty healthy one to me. Further in the thread he says that goats produces 2+ gallons a milk a day! wooo doggy! I was really wanting a goat one of these days. So what does goat milk taste like?

Different context here in the plumbing word, but same spelling - and not one other person who works here besides me can spell it. One of the guys just draws little things shaped like doughnuts when he needs to order more escutcheons.

I wanted to buy some goat's milk at the grocery store this weekend and they don't carry it anymore. Can you believe that?

That goat has a very nice udder. Very correct, good teat placement, etc. When filled for a show, udders often develope that bumpy appearance, so no big deal there. The rear feet are slightly bowed, not anything major, but can lead to gradual weakening with age-shorter productive life. All in all, a nice goat.

Yes, Maple, some goats can produce as much as 4 gallons per day, but, generally speaking, Nubians (which this goat is) don't fall in that category. For example, in 2009, the breed leader gave 3790 pounds of milk in a 305 day lactation. Each gallon weighs approximately 8 pounds, meaning this goat AVERAGED 1.55 gallons per day-and this goat is the BREED LEADER=HIGHEST PRODUCER OF THE YEAR. Now, goats have what's called a lactation curve, meaning that the milk production starts at a certain point (say, a gallon per day) then peaks at a certain point a few months into lactation (say, at three gallons per day) then tapers back down and eventually the doe is dried up. Usually, when someone gives a production amount-that is PEAK production amount, which doesn't last very long in the grand scheme of the production year. An average of the year is usually much more accurate as far as what to expect from a goat.

Alpines and Saanens are higher producers that Nubians, though they usually lack the rich components of Nubian/Nigerian Dwarf/La Mancha milk (butterfat and protien, milk solids).

Fresh, raw milk tastes like, uh, milk, but sweeter and richer and thicker. If you are used to drinking skim milk, it's a shock. They sell cream separators for milk, and if we'd staying in goats I would have gotten one. I drank our milk, but it was very very rich, I would have preferred not to be drinking all that fat. We have Nubians and La Manchas both from very high butterfat lines. You can definitely tell. DH won't touch the stuff, he's got a mental block against it.

G, when you are ready to buy a goat, get one that's already in milk and ask to TASTE it. Some goats have different tasting milk. Also, feed and forage affect taste, so be sure to ask what they are feeding if you like the taste. Don't feed weedy hay-dairy quality alfalfa is what we fed, with free choice grass as a filler.
