A good, edible, loose leaf lettuce should be closer to the ground. If it starts to get tall, it's called bolting. That's then the plant goes to seed, and the lettuce leaves become bitter. :)
Variety also plays a rolling how 'tall' it gets, for example, a Romaine will get taller since it's a heading variety.

Just wanted to share that my carrots have sexier legs than I do. Also my expert garden supervisor who makes me do all of the work.
