It seems going through these that older chickens are having more dramatic molts. True?

Alice had a pretty bad moult this year and she had only just turned one. Some of the older ladies here are having it pretty bad too though poor things.

Not much choice. She can't come in the house, she can't get on the roost, and the pattern is for naked battery hens and us not a pullover type

Here is my normally fluffy & full feathered Comet hen...looking like a Naked Nellie needing a pair of pantaloons! Oh you poor girl...grow feathers grow!

It's not like there's a shortage of protein, she's quite the greedy winner when it's mealworm time.

Have you noticed behavior change during molt? Like how the baldest suddenly become the fastest, grumpiest, greediest, most vocalist, most aloof & most modest?
Fast...running around like a nut, mostly away from you & the others
Grumpy...just look at that "disgusted with everything today" expression
Greedy...The mealworms are ALL MINE!
Vocal...I want mealworms & I want them now! Me, me me! Now!
Aloof...Don't touch me! My new feathers are sensitive darn it!
Modest...You are NOT taking my photo to show the world my nakedness for your molting contest, I mean really, how embarrassing!

November photos showed my poor Pumpkin...looking like a Naked Nellie without her pantaloons.

Update...it's January now, and my little Comet, Pumpkin, is filling in, but still needs her tail feathers to grow. I've added high protein feed. Well, at least she isn't quite as naked.

Got a spare bathroom that doesn't get much use? Bath tubs are great! Mine is an occasional chick brooder or sick bay if necessary Lol

Good question. I don’t know.
It’s not always the older the more dramatic . In general ?

Maybe so...my 6 mos olds do not appear to be molting, but I know they are, as they've shed feathers and they look amazing. A few of my seniors are looking rough around the edges for sure! They're also ALL quite moody, downright grumpy! Well, extra protein & mealworms for all.

I don't... Have a cancer patient in the house undergoing treatment so she can't come in, also dh is allergic. These sweaters are designed for molting chickens so I'm not sure about the problem when it's going to get below freezing, she needs to have something so that's what I'm doing. There's going to be radiant heat too, but once the freezing rain starts it won't be enough to cut the cold, she needs a layer on her.
