Contest Details:
This is a contest to see who can create the best coop/run article for BYC. We define the "best article" to mean pages with the most information, pictures, plans, details, etc. that will be very helpful to others who want to build a coop and/or run. We don't care if your coop was made out of recycled pallets and was made in 2 days, or if it was made out of the highest grade materials, took 5 months, and is a scale model of the Taj Mahal. We want helpful and informative coop articles!

Prizes:
First Place: The first place winner of the contest will get a FREE ChickenGuard Automatic Coop Door Opener and Door Kit!


Second Place: (at least 2) will get a $50 Gift Certificate for the BYC Store!
Third Place: (at least 2) will get a $20 Gift Certificate for the BYC Store!

You'll be using the BYC Page & Article Creation Tool to design your pages and creating a page here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/category/coops.12/

Deadline: The deadline will be based on the number of submissions we receive and how quickly we get them. Usually we wait for at least 30 - 40 submissions. Once we get "enough" we'll give everyone at least 1 week notice before the contest ends so they can put final touches on their submissions.

Things to include in your page:

1. Start with a finished coop/run picture at the top of your page
2. Have a write-up of how you built your coop/run. Include any information you think would be helpful to other people who may want to build something similar. If you are unsure how to create a page, see our Coop pages and member pages tutorial here.
3. If you have them, include designs & plans you used to build your coop/run.
4. Pictures of your coop/run as it was being constructed.
5. Finished pictures of your coop/run.
6. A list of things you want to change or add to your coop/run.
7. Additional information about what you learned, what you'd do differently the next time, and any other tips for potential coop builders.

To increase your chances of winning the contest, make sure it has as many of the elements above in as much detail as possible! Here are some additional hints to help you win the contest:

1. Follow the format of some of the existing chicken coops.
2. The more details and pictures the better!
3. Plans plans plans. Very few coop designs have plans available. If you post plans (rough or detailed) of your coop you'll get bonus points for sure!
4. Pictures - We all love lots of big beautiful and helpful pictures!
5. Remember, this is a contest for the most helpful coop build page and not the best looking coop.

Does that disqualify it and can it be moved by me or staff??

We put a wooden floor in my son's playground and covered it with linoleum. Then we walled in the sides with plywood--added front and back doors and a pop door and playhouse windows and a nest box. Left over roofing from our house went on top and a couple of roosts. I am happy to answer any questions! We left the slide to bring down shavings bales and the swing set --just for fun!

Easily the single best purchase I have made for the coops! It really works well and can be used with any door not weighing more then 8 lbs (that slides up and down). It seriously is amazing! It opens & closes right on time every morning and night and the chickens are used to it now, so they know when the door starts winding they better get their butts in!

First is my goose house AKA Quack Shack. It is a old horse barn that my dad built my show horse. He even put up stone work. We got a second hand French door. He put in the istullation and ply wood. The height is 9 ft. and the floor space is 121 sq. ft.. I have a dog house for a nesting box bought at a second hand store and a pen that can be used as a separation pen for what ever emergency.

Second is my duck house AKA Duck Inn.
This was a water storage house. So the height is only 4 feet at one end and three at the other. It came insulated. It has dirt floors. Total sq ft. is 71. inside. I have 10 duck inside at night. For the door my dad used a old window. The door also has a air vent built in. There is a small duck door the ducks can go in and out. I will say I wish it were taller for when I have to clean it out. For the run I used 3 foot high 16 foot long hog panels a total of three panels and a sheep panel connected to the goose house and I used two sides of the duck house. There is a total of about 300 sq feet of out door space in the run. I use dog crates for nesting boxes.

I bought my coop from Backyard Chicken Coops so won't take credit for building something from scratch but I did build retaining wall, assemble the coop and insanely decorate it. It took me 3 months from start to finish and I'd love to share my journey.

First I painted the entire coop in Black and Half Spanish White. I then made a large sleeper bed that the coop was built on. I filled the inside of the sleeper bed with sand. I love sand as a coop base, it's so incredibly easy to keep clean and great when you have a mix of chooks and ducks. Then I wallpapered the interior of the hens house so my hens would have a girly, happy sleeping area.

Finishing touches included:
- lining the metal base trays with thick astro turf as its easy to clean and replace.
- a classy mirror for my lady's to check themselves out every morning
- Feathery wreath in the lady's bedroom
- installed Xylophone for Chicken made music
- Hen House Sign
- green butterfly wall hanging
- fairy lights for a night time sparkle

I also installed a bathtub with plumbing just outside the chicken coop for my ducks.

I also painted and wallpapered my old chicken coop to match my new one and added a quarantine sign at the top as this is now where I house any sick chickens. (no photo)

My partner helped me assemble my coop as its a 2 person job but other than that I did everything myself so I'm a little chuffed with my Girls Forever Home.
