Quote: Update #2: Jan. 28, 2015
After a couple cold spells, the horizontal nipples were frozen solid through December. Although the water inside the bucket was not frozen, the small tubing through the insulation layer connecting to the horizontal nipple were frozen. We added a 5-watt aquarium heater in the water, it did not help. When switched to a 50-watt aquarium heater, the horizontal nipples worked beautifully for a month now.
To avoid melting the plastic bucket, the aquarium heater element was wrapped in an aluminum tube made of leftover gutter screen. We also had to run a 100-ft long heavy-duty extension cord to the coop through the backyard, not something preferred, but unavoidable.
I still bring fresh warm water out everyday, but on those late days or inclement weather, I know the chickens always have access to the insulated water feeder.
Lol.
Have you hatched in it yet?I hope I'm not to late to enter!
