After a couple cold spells, the horizontal nipples were frozen solid through December. Although the water inside the bucket was not frozen, the small tubing through the insulation layer connecting to the horizontal nipple were frozen. We added a 5-watt aquarium heater in the water, it did not help. When switched to a 50-watt aquarium heater, the horizontal nipples worked beautifully for a month now.

To avoid melting the plastic bucket, the aquarium heater element was wrapped in an aluminum tube made of leftover gutter screen. We also had to run a 100-ft long heavy-duty extension cord to the coop through the backyard, not something preferred, but unavoidable.

I still bring fresh warm water out everyday, but on those late days or inclement weather, I know the chickens always have access to the insulated water feeder.

Hi I think this will help keep chickens water clean in the winter. It's a heated water bowl.

The thing you use to make it is a heated dog water bowl, some wire to hang the bowl and stuff to make holes in the bowl. You also need electricity in your chicken coop. Here's a picture of our heated chicken bowl and heat lamp plugged in.

Have you hatched in it yet?

No, I am just starting to save eggs for it. I just finished building it a day or so ago. :)

I have been test running it and if anyone makes it you might wanna shoot for a 50watt bulb instead of 60 watt or add more venaltion holes! I went to check on it and it wa 109 degrees- so I added more air holes and turned my room's heat down
