Ended Official BYC Mini-Contest - What’s Your Hobby

Pics
What is it that you love about this hobby?
I ride horse! We own 2 horses, and love to race cars in the field by the road!
When do you do the Hobby?
All year! Rain or shine! The mares need to get out!
What sacrifices do you make to be able to practice your hobby?
We make no sacrifices, we love to ride all the time, and we have time on our hands during Covid!
Are you an amateur? An adept? An expert?
I think I am an expert. I have stopped my mare full gallop in a lope running down the highway bolting. It was scary, but I never give up and bail, I always stay on, and get her to stop. Never serenader and fall of.
Are you lucky enough that this hobby is part of your job/income?
Maybe, we are interested in buying a ranch. It is very expensive, and not super likely we will purchase it, but if we do, then yep! Our horses will bring income!
IMG_3271.jpg

This is one of our mares Misty! She is mine and a joy to ride! We love to race cars and our top speed is 38 MPH. Fun contest!

What is it that you love about this hobby?
I also LOVE to bake! I have a mini business with all natural ingredients, and never any artificial ingredients or food dies! I always bake homemade, and NEVER anything prepackaged!
When do you do the Hobby?
Mostly rainy days, and when I need to bake cakes and other bakes for other people.
What sacrifices do you make to be able to practice your hobby?
I have to sacrifice horse ride, and outdoors time to bake when people need cakes for my mini business.
Are you an amateur? An adept? An expert?
I think I am expert, I made my first wedding cake a little bit ago! Baking all natural is difficult, you had no idea how difficult it was before I found al natural food dies! Making pink with beets is hard! Lol!
Are you lucky enough that this hobby is part of your job/income?
Yep! I make at least $40 a cake, and often closer to $60. I enjoy it!

My wedding cake! I used Homemade marshmallow fondant with homemade marshmallows, and I never use Buttercream, to sweet. Only cream cheese frosting! 😊

Entry 3
Writing! I have always loved writing stories, I think my first story I wrote in 2 grade. I'll see if I can find it if y'all want. I have about three or four going now...I'm trying to write one in the Pride and Prejudice style. I'll take a pic but you may not be able to read my handwriting lol😁

I love that you write by hand. There’s something just as cool about paper vs computer as there is as a book versus tablet!

One of my hobbies is crocheting, though admittedly not as well as @CluckerFamily . I mosty crochet amigurumi (stuffed toys), but I"m working on some hats. I'm not sure why I really like it- I love the feeling of yarn, and it's very calming to do, especially when it's a simpler pattern. It's very satisfying to watch a string of yarn turn into a fabric before your eyes. Because I usually do smaller scale projects, I crochet in little bits and pieces all day- in the car, between classes at school, before dance, before bed..it's super easy to carry a ball of yarn, a piece of paper, a crochet hook, and a paper clip around, especially when 3 out of the four items are attached. Some sacrifices I make to be able to practice the hobby- probably mostly money. I've managed to get myself hooked on some expensive yarn, and patterns can cost a bit. Without a real job, it's hard to pay for the stuff to use. I'd consider myself intermediate in the field of crocheting- I can read patterns and learn new stitches easily, but I only started this spring. I also tend to lose steam on long projects. Unfortunately, I'm not able to make any money off of my crochet :( People I'm able to reach don't tend to care about 'handmade' enough to pay for materials and work time.

This is the top of a slouchy hat I'm working on. (yes, a hat for a human- it's not done!!!) (I get asked if it's a hat for a person like 42 times every day lol) It's fingering weight yarn and a super simple pattern of single crochets, which shows off the yarn color nicely.

Here's a little crochet chicken I did. It's a modified pattern.

Fish Cat toy of my own design. Filled with catnip.
View attachment 2420623
Mouse cat toy I did. Also filled with catnip. I'd like to get a business on etsy going with these, but I'd need to make them in a bunch of different colors, and also make a lot. I'm worried that I'll either have loads of interest with these and make too little, or make lots and be disappointed. I'm also considering doing little octopus ones. The issue with that is the octopus isn't my pattern.

This is a bunny ear headband I made for my friend's little sister. they have a rabbit that's white with black spots and ears, named Cookie. Little sister said she 'wanted Cookie ears' and in my quest to be the coolest friend, I made her some
I love the cat toys!
These creations make great gifts for all ages!! Family, friends, teachers, neighbors, etc.
We also do something in Wisconsin where people crochet/knit hats, mittens, and scarfs and put them in Christmas trees the city puts up or on light poles throughout town and these can be taken by anyone who needs them. This may be something that may interest you. Especially if the word gets around, some people love to give yarn for these projects to help the community.
I completely understand the feeling of crocheting! It is tough to sum up but it is so relaxing, stress relieving, and enjoyable are just a few words to describe it.
This Christmas “giving” tree is awesome!!!

Also not an entry-

I guess I should have mentioned I read as a hobby as well. Since before I can remember and my first novel was Call of the Wild when I was only 8. I'd already burned through all the animal, nature, and adventure books at the library so the Librarian thought CotW might keep me busy for a while. Yeah, no...I consumed it voraciously and asked for another one.

I've never stopped reading, but the content has changed a lot over the years. Plenty of fiction, but I love to learn and have an embarrassing amount of non fiction, how to, and educational books. So much so that I need more bookcases even though I have about a dozen already.
...always wanted a large house so I could dedicate one room to being my own personal library.

And speaking of libraries, for those of us who like to smell books, I think libraries and books stores are heavenly!! If I have to be indoors, there's no place more satisfying than a bookstore or a big library! Like stay all day and not even realize they are about to close until someone kicks you out.
I’d never be able to kick out a comfy snappy!

Hobby #1: Writing
I love to write. Being able to create a world with just a few words, making loveable characters, character arcs, plot twists, making people laugh, cry, smile, and want to throw the book across the room XD

I write any time I can, whether it be a fanfiction, my WIP, or a Role Play with friends. I don't consider myself an amateur, - I've been doing this for two years now - but I'm definitely not an expert. I don't think I ever will be, to be honest. But that's half the fun of it!

Part of writing is collecting notebooks to write in... Most of my writing in on Google Docs, but there's nothing like a good old notebook to scribble in.

Not really sure how to take pictures of my writing... but here are some pictures of my notebooks!!

The words have kind of rubbed off on this one. But they are still legible.

Love your notebooks!
Ok, yes thank you! My #3 was gonna be writing in a nutshell. I was talking with my friend the other day and we discovered that she has 19 journals/ books filled with her writings and I have 23 :lau. No joke. I looove writing. I don’t have any pics, really, so I guess I can’t use that as an entry 🙁.

I’ve been writing about covid, how life has changed because of it, My Old puppy that we had to get rid of, etc.
sometimes I like writing fiction stories as well. I’m in the middle of helping my friends create a movie script right now.
I bet it’s fun to go back through all of those journals!

Hobby #1 - Goats

Goats. I love goats. They are the best! Even better than chickens on certain days... ;)
We only have 3 goats right now, but I'm REALLY REALLY hoping to get more! We have a kinder (Nubian/Pygmy cross), and two Nigerian Dwarfs. We breed them all for milk and cute babies every year, but recently I've been trying to get closer to the American Dairy Goat Association standard with our Nigerian Dwarfs. :) We've been having trouble getting our nicer doe of the two Nigerian Dwarf does bred, but hopefully she will have kids eventually!

We haven't done LA, DHIR, or milk tests with either of them..YET! I'd like to start doing all of that if I can be sure our nicer doe can have babies. ;) We have taken them to a couple ADGA shows as well as some 4-H shows across New Jersey.

Of all the things I love about goats, of course, the whole, fresh, unprocessed goats' milk is amazing, but I love their individual personalities! It's so fun getting to meet the new babies every time they kid, and learning what they like, don't like, and where they love to be scratched. ❤

I certainly wouldn't call myself a goat 'expert' but we have been doing it for 7 years, and while we have made a good amount of mistakes along the way, we are always learning and improving our management practices and our knowledge of these cute funny little creatures.

These are our three girls..

OH EM GEEEEEEEEE. must get goatsssss. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

#1) I LOVE anything arts and crafts. I knit, sew, cross stitch, diamond paint, sculpt, etc. One of my favorite things is that I get to share it with my son, who has shown a real interest in art and takes after me MUCH more than his dad ☺ And it's the art that I get to make with him that is always my favorite!

I'm lucky that I've been able to acquire a LOT of supplies over the years so I can make lots of interesting stuff. My craft box has stuff like fake human teeth and so when it comes to making monsters, our entries tend to usually win or at least place!

I painted these guys but I draw and paint on canvas too. I really need to start a portfolio instead of just cramming stuff into boxes when I move. Thank God Google Photos has a backup of the pictures, at least!
Do you hide the rocks for people, too??

I've always loved animals & making or repurposing or crafting. I was either drawing, painting or making something (hopefully more than a mess) since I was 3 yrs old. I used to give as unique gifts or sell sometimes at craft shows, anything from pen & ink, charcoal & watercolor to flower silk & eucalyptus arrangements or swags, handpainted fabric painted shirts, dream catchers with feathers from my birds, to woodwork items, from making little birdhouses or bird themed decor, dog houses from scrap wood out of construction site dumpsters, to repurposing or creating new uses for old furniture like storage, armiores, hutches, desks, etc. I like finding a use for things that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Even old tools can be displayed as art. It's fun being creative...keeps me out of trouble, too! 😆

(I've recently lost over 2,500 irreplaceable photos when I got a new phone, but have managed to find a few through old emails)
I love cardinals!!!
Yeah, it hurts, entire life & career portfolio gone, but what hurts mostly is the loss of photos of people I love, no longer with us.
:hugs
#3) ANYTHING beauty related! I LOVE making jewelry and doing hair, nails, and makeup! I am definitely much more skilled at this than a lot of my other talents. I've practiced at this stuff since I was a kid.

I could probably charge money for some of my items or makeovers but most of the time, I just don't have the time to do it. I only have a son so when my friend's daughters come over here, they always ask for me to do makeover. It may be the most technical of all the hobbies I indulge in because every human face and body is different. Eyes are different shapes so I'm always adapting my method on the fly.

But it's definitely one of my more useful talents 😍

This wigs are amazing!! So much work.
My second love after animals....

I good long ride on hard enduro trails! My dirt bike is my baby. The Desert 100 is the biggest race in this area located in eastern Washington. They finally put up a 100 mile women’s class, which they didn’t have for 40+ years. Now us females have others to compete with! They finally realized that the 50 mile race wasn’t enough for some of us. And competing with males is not proper competition.

Thousands of other dirt bike loving peeps gather in April for a weekend of races, poker runs and the beer tent lol I don’t drink when we’re there luckily.
View attachment 2421062

Last year my other half was my pit crew. He decided to do the poker run instead of the race.
View attachment 2421070

Friends of ours pit as well. I had hit a guy that stopped, didn’t look to see if anyone was coming, and walking right out in front of me. Was in 4th gear plowing through a flat field. The wreck wasn’t pretty and messed up my wrist. They tried to convince me to stop and not finish the last 50 miles. Ha! Don’t think so. Had already ridden 40 miles after the wreck.

In the PNW, there are a few good areas to ride and I’m up there normally every weekend. But a new bike is on its way and the other is torn down and getting ready to be sold. I will miss it!

2020 hasn’t been kind to a lot of people. The year started out with getting hit by a drunk driver who was going 50mph when he rear ended us. Totaled our trailer and our truck. Frame was taco’d
View attachment 2421090

I was the only one injured somehow. Severe whiplash, torn shoulder and left with nerve damage in my neck. This year was spent going to doctors, MRIs, X-rays and surgeries. Has 2021 arrived yet?
View attachment 2421092

Thank goodness the birbs were here this year. Had to take months off of riding to recover. They are the perfect creatures to get your mind off of crap.

#1 - KNITTING
What is it that you love about this hobby? - its relatively inexpensive; its relaxing; can be done anywhere; can make very useful items not just decorative
When do you do the Hobby? Anytime; in the evenings; while traveling; in the waiting room at the doctor’s office; while on walks on occasion
What sacrifices do you make to be able to practice your hobby? Not many, thats the awesome part of knitting
Are you an amateur? An adept? An expert? - adept. I dont think
I would ever consider myself an expert
Are you lucky enough that this hobby is part of your job/income? People have paid me for my stuff and even requested specific things

Here is a hat I’m working on right now laying on a blanket I also made. I chose this picture simply because I really hate cable needles and instead use a short point tip, or something similar, and hope to maybe help someone out with that bit. Cabled patterns are gorgeous but can be frustrating if you have to constantly lose then chase that cable needle around, not to mention your stitches. With heavier yarns or more stitches I have used a chopstick run through the pencil sharpener a little bit.View attachment 2421519
This is fascinating. There’s no cable needle in there?
Hobby Number 2 - painting in oils, watercolor and acrylic - some samples: Boy Clown, Woodland Waterlilies and Ohiki Rooster
