but that wouldn't win over a lot of people, especially people that eat a lot of processed food and don't appreciate fresh. "just because I eat beef and drink milk, doesn't necessarily mean I want a bunch of cows in a pasture right near my house", for example.
Agree, how clueless is that? No matter what food they eat, and how processed it is, it has to come from some farm somewhere. With way too many farms unfortunately getting sold for development, some suburbanites are going to have to live near dairy cows, pigs, chickens, crops that get sprayed with harmful insecticides and herbicides...
And get a clue that it matters, and they should pay attention to where their food comes from, and try to use their wallet to make things better.

Don't you just LOVE people who move into the country and then complain about the sounds of the country -- roosters, farm machinery at dawn, chainsaws, etc?

I grew up under one of the then main approach routes to Greater Pittsburgh International Airport and every now and then people would move into the neighborhood and start complaining about the airplanes. Didn't they notice them right up there in the sky when they looked at the property?

We rented a house on a cattle farm for 6 months or so once. Cows are excellent neighbors -- quiet and minding their own business.
I have obviously run into that situation. I have since purchased a couple bordering lots to expand my homestead operation. I do my best to be a good steward, business person and neighbor. I have a very good relationship with my neighbors. Even the HOA committee leader.

I'm afraid that even my SIL, with whom we shares the property, has that attitude sometime.

Yes, the little sawmill 3 properties away can be heard sometimes after dark. We knew there was a sawmill on the corner when we bought to property.

Yes, the neighbor who works a full-time day job mows his lawn at dusk. You can't hear it when you're inside with the AC on so why do you care?

Yes, half the houses on the road have some kind of project build half-completed and visible from the road. And no, the siding and roofs on the sheds/carports/woodsheds/etc. don't match the siding and roof of the house. Why do you care?

Drives me nuts. All the way back to when I was a kid with people complaining about airplanes when they moved under the approach route and complaining about trains when they moved within sight of the tracks.

I'm trying to be positive about a possible subdivision going in a couple miles away -- potential customers for my future egg sales, maybe. :D

Our chickens are well received in the community. Except by 1 of our neighbors. Now she spends her winters in FL.
Thanks a lot BOB. Just what we need, more uppity gripey stanky yankees infesting our pristine Florida wonderlands. :) Tell her that Guam is better, like a mini Hawaii and she'd probably LOVE it there SOOO much better. Do the entire country a favor send her to GUAM !

Yah I noticed that about these types, real quick to weasel slither to city hall, code enforcement, etc, instead of saying something directly to you. Or even worse, when you do meet them in the morning, they'll be sweet as butter, smiley, saying good morning, bla bla, while they are working to screw you. Of course there really is no integrity anymore, this latest generation of kids, seem to pride themselves on A: Being able to get over on you and B: being first to snitch you out and post it on youtube for anything. Really disgusting where this country is going. When the day comes that you can't have chickens, humanity is done for! :p

I’m impressed by the poll results so far. So many lucky people with good neighbors! One of my neighbors made my life hell because of the chickens, before I even put any chickens in the coop! He was against chickens on principle. Against everything about them. Against animals in general, actually - he said animals other than dogs or cats were filthy and had to be kept far away from people 😱 Total nutjob, mean and aggressive.
I love dogs but honestly they can be some the most annoying animals on the planet. Somehow because they’re dogs they get a pass where chickens don’t???!! I have a neighbor with such dogs. 4 to be exact. They screech and Yelp at all hours. Yes he hears my chickens. I give free eggs. All he has to offer is free dog turds!

I have a cattle and goose farm farm to one side, a stable across the road from me, and I can faintly hear some roosters in the distance on the other sides. Down the road is a sawmill that I hear sometimes. The rural soundscape is great and I don't think anyone cares about anyone else's sounds.

Oh man. Before I moved to where I am now, I was in a complex of multi-family house things. When I was house hunting someone moved into the building across from me with a massive dog that they would shut out on the balcony all day, where it would bark every 5-10 seconds until it was hoarse. I never understood how that was ok, but it was still quieter than the guy I shared a wall with who didn't even have any animals but regularly rattled my furniture at 3am with loud music.
