Official BYC Poll: How Do You Keep Your Coop Smelling Fresh?

what do ya’ll have underneath your bedding/litter? For example, i have plywood and stapled linoleum and about 4inches hemp. What is your opinion? They only sleep in the coop. Should I be concerned with the linoleum?

THe lineolium .. spelling yah I know, too lazy to correct. Might trap stuff underneath it after a while but don't thik it'll be too bad. Mine is just wood flanks, I have a chicken tractor that was given to me by someone else who had chickens. Just wood seems to be good and less expensive. If it's kept covered with the mulch etc then it should not get TOO dirty to begin with, but chickens do love to dig it all into a corner searching for bugs.

You said stapled linoleum my only concern might be that wood warps and its shape can flex over the staples working themselves out, and possibly trapping a toe over time.

Thanks Aaron, I’m not concerned too much because the hemp litter is about 4inches and they don’t scratch or do much in the coop. But, we havnt spent a winter season in there yet. I will have to keep my eyes peeled. Good point Aaron. Thanks

Painted outdoor rated wood floor in the coop I built.

A resin coated floor came with the coop I bought.

Neither is slippery. GC

Mine don't scratch either, normally, but from time to time they'll get a bug up their but and literally scratch it to bare floor with all the bedding piled in a heap against the wall, IF I am lucky, if they are pointing the other way it goes out into the grass, no good there. They seem to do this more when they are caged up for a day or so and not allowed to free range. But your results most likely will vary.

Just saying, if a staple gets worked up half way out of the wood and they get a claw / toe stuck underneath that staple hoop, they might get in trouble with it.

It's a good idea to give the structure a quick look over when you change the bedding.

A thin layer of Sweet PDZ on the poop boards, poop boards scooped daily, hemp bedding on the coop floor, hemp bedding changed out annually, 22 sq ft of year round ventilation with an additional 22 sq ft opened up for warm weather ventilation and probably most significantly, a predator proof run attached to the coop where the pop door is never closed where the chickens immediately retreat to when coming off the roost.
The run is covered with wood chips that get raked about every other month to even them out and everything cold composts in there. I've never removed material from the run. My brother-in-law commented when he entered the coop for the first time "I can't believe it doesn't smell in here."

Easy: we keep it CLEAN. It gets pine shavings in the nest boxes and under the roost bar drop zones removed and replaced every week. Twice a year, it gets a thorough cleaning with all the interior "removables" (roost bars, removable drop trays, and such) removed for a scrub-down. Cracks and crevices are treated for bugs during the twice per year cleaning too or as necessary. Vent fans are cleaned as needed, and everything gets vacuumed with a shop-vac twice per year too. So far so good...
