As of this morning, we have 2 less chickens. Something got into the coop last night and killed them plus injured another. So now we have 13 hens and a roo. Trying to nurse Little Whitey. Her neck and left eye got damaged but she is eating and drinking - in a pet carrier in the shade right now. Neighbor is going to set a live trap outside the coop tonight. He thinks it was a raccoon.
Sorry to hear about your chickens. The raccoons came to my place last night and there was still plenty of light and one was so bold it literally stood 1 foot in front of me and gave me a dirty look like I was interrupting his dinner. I just looked around the coop and I think more came back during the night - looks like I'll be out there again tonight.

I currently have 62 chicks but no exact count of hens and roos at this point - they move too fast and they are still young enough that I question what a few are.

Well - our number went down again - we're developing a regular chicken cemetery Minus 1. Neighbors trap just caught a cat, which was most likely theirs anyway - so he'll set it again tonight.

One hen acting somewhat sluggish past 3d, up and died in my arms today. That makes us 12 hens and a roo. I am really getting discouraged. They want $40 for a necropsy. Sorry, can't afford that. Rest of hens acting normal. Anyone wants to comment I will post something about this hen in "Emergencies/Diseases" forum under title of "Died in my Arms" Would appreciate any thoughts and experiences.

What did you do with this bold raccoon? Will they attack people?

I wonder if we add up all the chickens from BYC members, how many that would be?!

I also wonder how old the oldest chicken on here is - maybe we could start another thread on this question?

They are generally scared of people and may even be curious but they can attack if they feel threatened. This one had its back to the coop and it first seemed curious but that changed pretty quickly when it realized it couldn't back up and growled at me.
