Domestic dogs have been the worst problem and predator of my hens.

Sometimes dogs will get into my garden. If my chickens are free ranging they can get them. Other times a dog has broke into my chicken run and killed the hens and ducks.

Even 'friends' will bring their dog to see someone in my family and that dog will get a chicken.

i lost a duck to an owl.....then i read somewhere that if you string along the top of the pen, an owl won't even try.....if they can't get into the pen quickly and escape with their prey they will leave them alone.....we put orange string zig-zagging between fence posts but we also lock them in their box at night....too many coyotes

That sucks sorry to hear about your chickens...on our street each house has about 5 acres & we have about 3 labs from our neighbors that come around but they don't bother the chickens thank goodness...We had to teach our choclate lab who was raised a duck dog LOL b/c my dad used to duck hunt, but he's about to turn 12 & he's easily taught things so he's good w/our chicks now, possibly from lazyness lol

I just confirmed the "Missouri Wildlife Code" which says that you have the right to relocate or "dispose" of an animal who is in the process of destroying or did destroy your property/kill livestock/etc. There are likely exceptions to that Code - like endangered animals - but raccoon (the latest successful predator for my EEs) is not one of them. As angry as I feel when I am greeted at my chicken run with a mass of feathers blowing about, other animals do need to eat, too.

I just wanted to take a second to say THANKS. I'm in Colorado & you gave me some wonderful advice on bear proofing my coop & yard. The bear only tried once. It must have gotten shocked, as it tried to dig under fence. I ran two strands as you suggested. I have seen it in my yard 3 times this summer. Once the City Police were looking for it. I was headed inside as they were pulling up my drive. They said "Very smart" when they came back down my hill.

That's so freaky, I swear I'm so glad we live where we do, although we do have some black bears in Arkansas, most of them aren't in little rock, although my cousins friend did see one last hunting season about 30 min from our house; kinda freaky b/c I've never been up against an animal of that size..that could.....eat me....lol

black bears are nothing I had a friend that tangled with a large brown bear and all he had on him was a 8 inch bowie knife but he did manage to walk away from the attack alive cant say that about the bear. now I am not telling anyone to mess with any bear without a high powered rifle my friend had more going for him than most do ...he was 7 foot tall and could lift a full grown hog bare handed and even if that sounds like you i still don't recommend trying it, as he still had to have over 300 stitches afterwards.
