Official BYC Poll: What do you do with your roosters?

We all know the importance of having a "rooster plan" when raising chicks. My first option is to sell mine. If I cannot sell I give them away and if I'm really stuck I have the option for them to go live on my friends farm.

I do eat chicken but personally I would find it difficult to butcher a chick I've raised. Fortunately I've never had to do it. I'm really interested to know what you all do with your boys...

I try to give them away first. But I’ve culled a few also.

We butcher all that don't work out. I don't like butchering either but feel it's the best of my options. The meat my husband eats has to come from somewhere, might as well be a bird raised humanely and happy. It also keeps the respect in the meat eating process knowing who that animal on your plate was.

We keep a very few as replacements; the others are either in our freezer or sold. I agree with oldhen about raising our own meat humanely.

I give them away to people who don't have a rooster, or people who don't even know they wanted one until i tell them the "perks" of ownership...nobody likes tripping over hens.

I have given them away in the past, but this year and into the foreseeable future I will be butchering close to 100% of the extras. I am tired of giving away the feed and time I put into those cockerels only to have someone else eat them.

I will pick out the best to keep and use as my breeders. I have given away some in the past, and we do butcher and eat the remainder.
I agree about putting in the time and feed only to have someone else benefit, but sometimes its easier, and because I work full time I just flat out run out of time to take care of everything.

Process them and any pullets I don't plan on keeping. I wouldn't mind selling them but it's a hassle, and then we would be buying more chicken from the store.
