Just curious - how old was that rooster at butcher?

Had to change my vote from other to including my own. It was true and correct at the time that the flock was not for meat and still aren't. Since then there has been a hatch. Some of those are going to be on the table.

a very practical and pragmatic approach to the problem of "excess" Roos. Good eats!

I still eat chicken however I get too attached too quickly to think about eating my layers. If I were going to raise chickens for meat, I'd probably keep them separate and not spend as much time with them as I do now and definitely NOT name them - lol.

When you have a few, you learn personalities. When you have a flock of them, harvesting the flock can be easy. You still learn some but the flock gets processed.

I'll keep an old layer around to teach the new members. Works out well.

I don't eat my flock 'cause that's not why I got them but if I did raise meat birds or wound up with a mean rooster I would eat them. My laying hens though are my pets and thus have names and I have a rule of not naming anything I plan on eating. I also consider laying hens to generally be too scrawny to bother with processing anyways. I still eat chicken as much as I used to. I am grateful for all my girl's hard work so I am proud to eat their eggs and find myself amazed rather than weirded out
