Where are my dirt lovers?

Dirt in a raised coop? Never heard of anyone doing that before although it would make it so much easier to compost and use for plants/gardening without having to wait a lengthy time for shavings/straw to break down into compost.

Linoleum floor with wood chips in a chickshaw. Clean out twice a year the hens keep it stirred up only used at night.

I live on a sand dune therefore the bare ground in my coops is sand.

how is that working? i read someone say to use sand and it's a lot easier to keep clean. i have some ready to go once i clean the coop!

we've always used hay from our cutting.

I hate to sound stupid but I will reiterate here that I am new to this. ... what the heck is PDZ? Is it a pesticide for mites or some type of bedding material. I have racked my brained on what it could be abbreviations for and did a search for it in the forum topics but everyone keeps abbreviating it so I don’t know what it really stands for. Sorry clueless. Thank you!

It works for me. If I lived on dirt, I would use a dirt floor.

I have seen many posts both for and against sand for bedding. Sand is free for the digging for me. I would not urge people to buy sand. Use what is available to you unless you feel the need to try something different. Free is good.

In my experience, it works best if put down before the bedding is put down.

Rice Hulls for the win. I live in northern California where rice hulls are plentiful and cheap. They're easy to scoop/sift manure out of and work really well for deep litter. My flock loves it when I throw a new bag in their 6'x10' coop. They will spend all day inside looking for bits of rice.

I use premium pine shavings from tractor supply company, they are large and not dusty. Easy to pick poop out.
