You're tired and jaded and need a break, but you can't figure out who could take care of your flock as well as you could? Even the most devoted chicken lover needs a break sometimes. However, we cannot figure out how to ensure that our chickens are as well taken care of as we would like. Perhaps you have to leave your home for another reason: perhaps a family emergency, or perhaps you have to work away.

So we would like to find out: When You Travel, Who Looks After Your Chickens?

Our grandfather/father watches them for us.

My sister used to come and watch them, she totally understood the importance of these birds to me and loved being able to get out of her apartment and be in the country for a bit. But sadly, she moved to Texas and so when I had a work trip that my partner wanted to join in on I found a pet sitting service that specialized in poultry. It didn’t go great, almost put my partner on a last minute flight home because I was panicking so bad. Birds were going to be left out overnight unprotected and to me that’s just a line that can’t be crossed. Luckily we were able to communicate and get things sorted in time, but it kind of ruined my hope of trusting my flock with a stranger. So now I’m flying my sister back out for a trip in the fall, she’s happy to help and I will be able to enjoy a stress free vacation.

You forgot Other.

I set up my birds so they can take care of themselves while I'm gone with occasionally someone coming down to check on them and refill feeders and waterers. I also let them keep the eggs if they want them.
Ditto. But I won't leave them any longer than 5 days either. They can probably do well for 7-8 but I'm usually missing them so badly by day 3 anyway. I need to hug my chickens & roosters! 😆 ❤️ 20210622_185037.jpg 20201004_123143.jpg

Last summer was the first time in a long time I went on a trip our neighbor came and took care of the chickens, ducks and cats I boarded the dogs because I don’t trust them alone with the birds. She got eggs and I also paid her.

We have chickens and cats. The petsitter plays with the cats and does the litter and then checks on the hens and cleans their coop. We pay her $25 a visit. She brings in the mail and packages and sends us pics. Worth every penny.
