We built ours over two years. Left hand side was an extension to our original hen house and the right hand side is the extension that allows us to separate groups if needed (like if we ever raise chicks in the house again and want to slowly introduce them to the flock).

The angles in this picture make it look a bit crooked but I assure you everything is actually level and plumb :lau. This shot was taken before we put the hardware cloth in each bay.

So many beautiful coops and runs. Kinda shames me with mine, but I still think it is fine. My brother built it from new materials. Has been in constant use for almost 6 years now and is still like new. He did a great job. The only issyue is it is not watrproof- so I put up shower liners. I think in the next year or so, I will tear this down and have him make a new coop- with a bigger run. The hens free range around the yard every day, so a large run is not necessary.

  1. Bought a small Pre-made/assembled run/coop combination
  2. Build a run from from an old party tent with new hwc and strong netting (birds of pray netting)
  3. Build an extension to the coop with new and re-used materials (perspex) and some western red cedar left over.
  4. Build a new compartment / extension to the run most with new materials (not on the photo)

We renovated an old 18 x 20 calf shelter. Dirt floor, insulated the walls, put in door that we had laying around from....I don’t remember what. It looks kinda funky, but I’m pretty sure a tornado couldn’t lift that tank. The calf shelter was built by one of our neighbors about 15 years ago out of railroad timbers and corrugated sheet metal. We had a bunch of chainlink fencing panels of differing lengths and put together a covered run that’s about 300 sg feet. All in all, it looks a little patchwork...but the chickens are safe and they don’t seem to really care how it looks, lol.

Some of the framing and some of the netting is new, but most of the plywood and all of the perches and nesting boxes and the frame of the run is leftover and repurposed materials from building our shed and moving.

Built 4x4 coop with new materials all in all costed me about 250$ for 6 bantams building a run soon also threw some 10$ solar lights on the top header that work great

The 1st small coop, Dad built using mostly recycled & leftover materials from other jobs, with the exception of the metal roof which we bought new. The pens were made from new treated lumber & new 1/2" wire mesh. I was helper, finisher & painter.

The 2nd coop I hired a contractor as I needed something larger when chicken math happened LOL. I did the finish work & painting.

I am planning on a remodel of the 1st coop to be larger & mimic the 2nd coop, covid19 has delayed that, but maybe in the spring.

It's always a work in progress as I learn, make changes & improvements, or just want to add some chicken decor, paint murals on interior walls or add sod & chickweed to pens...it seems I look forward to doing things out there more than anything else, as I love hanging out with my flock!
