Official BYC Poll: Where Do You Get Your Chicks From?

Since last year was my first with chicks, we got from a feed store. We got different breeds but this year gonna try for specific breeds. I don't have an incubator, or a broody hen (yet).

Wait!! BYC has a buy/sell/trade section? Where?

We have a monthly poultry swap in our area. (in pre-pandemic times) I have bought and sold chickens there. Lots of vendors sell day-old chicks as well as hatching eggs. I am looking forward to the swap resuming!

It just makes the interpretation a little different. The percentages represent the percent of voters who use a certain source for their chicks, not the percent of times a certain source was used. Sorry to butt in, I only have ducks, so I didn't vote. I'm just a huge math nerd, so I like looking at the polls.

To be specific - I only buy chicks from a hatchery (for variety, price, and convenience).

I let my broody hatch eggs that I get from a neighbor/breeder, but I don't take chicks from anyone that doesn't vaccinate.

We mainly have ended up with adult rescues. Our very first group of chicks we ever bought after getting married came from a feed store. One hen hatched out babies, but was a poor mom so we ended up with a single orphan we hand raised. She’s the only one out of this entire flock today who was raised from a chick by us personally.

I hatch everything except Cornish cross. Those come from a hatchery.

I got some rescue hens and hatched some ebay eggs. Then I hatched some eggs laid by those chickens.

Now I have chickens everywhere and want to hatch more eggs, but I fear things are getting out of hand with the chicken math.
