Official gardening thread

I'm excited to try. A friend of ours a bit up the road just threw the seeds in an empty spot in her garden and they went off. I was surprised. We've tried before and it didn't go to well, I'm definitely going to have to put some work into it, she has a slightly different climate then us. Any tips for me? :D
For one, Watermelon and honeydew are more cold-sensitive than cantaloupe.
Melons also will not all ripen at the same time, so plan to pick them as they become ready.

Also, they should be fertilized every two to three weeks

those are my tips! keep us updated, id love to see how it goes!

I hope it is cool, I’ve never tried growing it before. I ordered from rareseeds.com, so that might be why you’ve never heard of it before. It is supposed to be a bush variety of spaghetti squash. I’ve never managed to grow spaghetti squash successfully, but it’s worth a try!
Neither have i, i dont think ive tried growing that before! It sounds fun though.

Ooo! I love Spaghetti squash, growing some of that this year as well. I'll have to check that site out!

Okay, got it. Will rabbit poop work as fertilizer, or do I need something specific?
I will! Once we get the seeds and start them I'll post updates.

It is! And congratulations! Keep us all updated! :D
Yes, I will, thanks! I am passionate about gardening but I have a black thumb and the predators here are terrible (starving, overpopulated deer, among others). Last year I put netting over my garden beds and something TORE THE NETTING to get in, and devoured everything of course. We are going to use hardware cloth and rebar this year and hopefully that works, if not I might just give up. I have also tried container gardening on our back deck (it’s raised, so nothing can get in) and that seems pretty promising if I can get some irrigation set up.

Gardening can be tricky, we dont have predators, i call them nibblers.
rabbits, bunnies, squrriels, deer, chipmunks, your typical garden pets!
strawberries are SO impossible to grow, everything eats them!

Agreed, it is surprising how hard it can be to keep plants alive. Strawberries are really finicky in our climate since if it gets too hot or too cold, the plants get mad. Too wet and berries will rot, too dry and no berries! We love to pick berries at local nearby farms so I know all about it . I would still like to try growing some sometime.

the easiest plants ive EVER grown is Sage and Goji berries. They stay sooooo long to.

the sage lasted for id say 3 years with NO death. no watering, litterally NOTHING. it just survived forever with no effort and still tasted and smelt amazing! (Yes, went threw winter to!) soso recommend sage.

we watered it for like the first year and just stopped and it still survived. Of course it rained, but my point is is we didnt go out there with a watering can and water it, it just survived itself.

gohji berries my chickens love love love. i often dry them or swallow them whole, because biting into them raw is quite bitter. they hang and grow upsidedown so wild birds often wont grab them and rabbits cant reach them! Perfect plant
