Official Hatchers Unanimous Thread! ***Oh, and Support Group~~~~

My first lockdown tonight...3 buttercups, 1 barnevelder and 2 speckled sussex. (had a sad ending to my brooding BO, Mabel- so this is what we are left with) Nevertheless, this is the BEST!

I am truly addicted to this...I broached the subject of getting an incubator of my own (Rob, owner of BYC loaned me his when Mabel passed) and my boyfriend was not thrilled (yes boyfriend...or significant other at my age....ha ha! anyway he said if you finish your taxes I'll support you! Well i have NEVER finished my taxes at the speed that I didi last week.

I bought the R-com King Suro 20 and a very cool hands-off candler...So I'll be placing my next egg order with Gabbard Farms!

Wish me luck hatching these first babies!

Is it as hard for y'all as it is for me to see all the reports and pics of adorable fuzzybutts hatching like crazy all over BYC these days? I'm going crazy and my eggs have only been in for 4 days! I haven't even gotten to the first candling day yet!

I just read about hatching Trader Joe fertile eggs and saw someone is doing the same with Whole Foods fertile eggs. Now, that is hatching madness, dontcha think?

Wow! You sure are NICE. My DH was taught early on "Don't mess with the nest!" (And it wasn't even by me, but a co-worker talking about women in general and how to get along as he had been a feral bachelor for a decade or so. "Yaaaah Coworker!")

Seems like we've got an awful lot of (former) horse breeders here! Count me in! I had a stud farm/mare-ternity ward in the Sierra Foothills and during the summer when the horses were out to pasture I would convert a stall or two to chicken raising. Guess the two things are intermeshed...

Hee Hee my brooder is a 6ft round water trough in a 12x12 matted stall next to a former stallion who now has chicks for a neighbor I have another empty stall soon to be home to the turkeys. I do have a 3 room chicken house but this winter a storm came through and ruined the roof just bought roofing will be working on that besides my hubby put his truck parts in 2 of them so we have to get those moved out. I'm going camping next weekend so we were working on the RV fixing up the trailer hitch 3 of us girls are going to the lake to ride

My girls and I have our very first eggs in the incubator Saturday afternoon. Today I placed an order for a dozen more for the 17th. And am spending a lot of time looking at others for sale.... I don't know what I will do with all the chicks if they hatch. Luckily even though I live in the suburbs on a little half acre lot, the zoning guy told me I could have all the chickens I can fit!!!

I have a feeling I am not going to be able to stop this hatching habit, and I doubt dh will say much. He may not like all my animals, but always says if they make me happy, then they make him happy.

okay tonite I've looked at more than half of my 50 eggs

could only toss one and that one was postal scrambled from the start but I didn't candle them when I put them in. I have 15 BCM eggs I could only see into one and it is good so I guess after I've checked all my Delawares I will have to wait until day 10 for the Marans? Is there any special trick for those? This was all shipped eggs I am surprised at how many are good both boxes were damaged and I tossed one egg that had a small hole in it never noticed that until day 4. I think 2 of the BCMs are scrambled but I promise to not look at them for 3 days

I cannot believe how fast this week went when 21 days seems like forever

I have a tough time candling too. I usually have green, blue, brown and dark brown eggs. My daughter could see better than I. So she helps.
But make sure you do a sniff test, an exploding egg would be horrible.

Got more eggs in the mail last night...not enough room in the incubator. Hmmmm, what to do?

So I moved all the eggs due on the 27th out of the turner, I can turn those by hand for another day, but still had 3 extra new eggs. Laid those down on the other side of the turner. Lets hope I remember to turn them too!
