Official "I Love Silkies" Thread!!!

I can't believe how attached I have become to my chickens! It is so sad to loose one. I am so sorry!

I just acquired my first silkie (white) a week ago and had never seen them before and I don't know a whole lot about them except what I have discovered on-line. I was totally bowled over by her gentleness and desire to cuddle and her beautiful silkie "hair". She is 10 weeks old. You guys are wonderful with your knowledge and love for your babies! I thought I was weird!! (my husband still thinks I am). I need to ask some questions and hope you don't mind my ignorance. I believe she is bearded and her top hair grows down by the side of her nose. Does this make it difficult for her to see? Do you trim the hair on the sides so they can see better? I notice when she eats, she often misses with her pecks several times before she gets the food. She seems to navigate a lot by sound rather than actually seeing where she is going and it has takes a while before she steps on a new rug or floor that has a shadow.

I notice that several of you have your silkies out with other chickens and there is no problem. I also realize that introducing any new chick to the others is a long process. My other hens are wary when I take her outside (I stay right by her) and I can't see her hanging out with the gang but I also don't want them to pick on her, should I turn my back. Any suggestions? So far, she is a house chicken, and I must admit, I have been pretty lenient with the others in the late afternoon when I allow them to clean up the birdseed off the floor from my other inside birds. My roo is totally spoiled and when I am home, often is brought in for cuddles. In other words, my other 7 hens (2 Amaraucana, 1 barred Ply., 4 mixed) and one mixed roo are pretty much pets, as well as free range back-into-the-coop-at-night (on their own) chickens.

I was told that I can bathe her in warm water, but must immediately dry her with a hair dryer or she will die! Is there anything else I should know? Thank you for your help!

Thanks mcgertylee!

Um, if her crest is really huge then I might put a twisty in her hair to hold it out of her face so she can see! lol

When I gave on of my silkies a bath I gave her one in warm water and used soap to clean her off. Then I wrapped her in a towel. I don't have a hair dryer so I just had to carry her around until she was dry. If your DH doesn't mind you having her in the house then maybe you can just keep her there!

Or if your other chickens are picking on her then you might try building her a coop of her own? ( Just a though! )
Hope this answers some of your questions!

Thank you for your suggestions. I would like to keep her in the house most of the time, but let her out in the late afternoon with the others. No one has picked on her yet, but I have been right beside her. I don't think her top knot is big enough for a tie yet. Poor little dear, just walked into the foot stool! Some of the photos on this thread looked as if they might have been trimmed in front of the eyes, that's why I asked. My husband is not happy with my chickens, but he tolerates them for my sake. I honestly think he might be a little jealous! I get so much pleasure out of watching them and giving them special treats. My husband doesn't run across the yard when I make an appearance, nor does he find special bugs and then call and save them for me. Of course, he did build a lovely coop for them!
