I love silkies because they're so fluffy <teehee, I love fluffy things> and they're also sweet. That's a big bonus... It would be a bummer if they were so cute but they were mean... I have loved them forever, and don't see how you could hate them!!!!

And I'm so happy, 'cause I'm getting 8 of them sooooon!!!

I'm thinking that one of my black silkies(from a hatchery) is a cross. He has a red wattle on each side of his lower side beak, a reddish comb on top(not tall like regular chickens) and a few dark green tail feathers.

He is the only silkie rooster with those side wattles.

This isn't a normal feature for a silkie, right?

Also....my hens have been hanging out alone the past week. They are in the upstairs of their coop. I haven't found any eggs that they are sitting on. Is this normal for them to be off alone recently?

Thanks.

Grey is totally different from Splash.

Splash is the color of the birds posted above (pretty ones by the way), and Grey is black with silver/white streaks going through the feathers on the neck and chest.

Hatchery Silkies and highly bred Silkies are like totally different breeds. That said, I'm under the impression (I'm not completely sure), but it is correct for Silkie roos to either have very small, almost non-existing wattles or none at all. The latter is prefered, or so I hear. But because hatcheries breed for quantity, not quality, they really don't care and alot of the parent stock carry undesired genes. Silkie's combs SHOULD be anywhere from a dark purple to almost black. And their combs are walnut combs, so it's normal for them to look a little different. Walnut is a pretty uncommon type of comb unless you're talking about Silkies. However, from time to time, hatchery Silkies can end up with Single combs through bad breeding. As for the tail feathers, Silkies should lack normal hard feathering unless we're talking about the tail, feet, or wing feathers, in which case, it's okay for them to have a certain amount of normal feathering.

As far as the behavior is concerned, sometimes chickens do things that cannot be explained. Every once in a while my birds would act a certain way and then totally change their behavior for no apparent reason soon after. If they don't seem sick, don't worry. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

thanks, I've trying to get good breeding and showing stock, so far I have at least five pullets, now maybe I'll get a cockeral out of the next set of chicks.
