ok... i have passed a milestone on the road to being a crazy chicken lady.... :p

back story: i got it in my head i wanted a blue egg layer and long story short i was given 2 americaunas, and shortly there after i lost one of the americaunas along with one of my silver laced wyandottes... i dont know what happened to them- no feathers or anything... anyway, since loosing her buddy my other chickens have started bullying my remaining americauna... shes significantly smaller than the others and shes being bullied pretty bad. it wasnt bad when i first integrated them in and she had her buddy. they just steered clear of the others... anyway...

ive brought her inside and given her a bath because she smelled awful and i wanted to give her a break. shes never been messed with before now- but shes being extremely sweet and ive pretty much convinced my boyfriend she needs to stay inside now lol i know ive heard of others bringing them inside during treatments or for short periods but does anyone have an inside chicken? and if so do you do diapers? keep in a pen at nite or what?...

shes snuggled up in a blanket asleep on the couch next to me now. :love

Before her Bath...

I have a serama who lives inside most of the time (she goes in the run with my other bantams when I go out). She has a little crate with food and water and a nest area where she can come and go and I keep her in diapers. At night I have a very small cage which I hang from the curtain rail for her to sleep in.

By the way you could try drying your girl with a hair dryer after baths. They actually quite enjoy it.

See my thread Hens in the hall under injures section. I’ve got two of them in a small two metre Omlet Go run. They’ll have to stay there for another month until their feathers grow back as it’s too cold at night to put them outside. The run is big enough but they do go a bit stir crazy ( they’ve been there since 10th January) so they are let out in my hall and kitchen. We just wipe each poo quickly away. Cats not keen on the arrangement but is coming to terms with it!

House chickens do require work but if you are willing to do it, go for it. They can be smelly at times but don't isolate your hen to the back room. If she is going to be a house pet she will need to be a part of your 'flock'. Chicken diapers work well for some folks, and you can keep her housed in a dog crate at night-but be aware chickens make a lot of poop at night! Good luck and enjoy your house chicken!
