Officially-Who are the best layers?

Hrm... I know someone who sells green & blue eggs exclusively at local farmers markets. His operation is not a small one. He's getting ready to expand his EE flock in case his wife loses her job and they need to rely on the green egg proceeds.

AS you'll note I said "likely be tested...," a wordy way of saying you may have trouble selling them.
Here in Dixie, anything as high-falootin' as blue and green eggs is not generally trusted. Brown eggs, on the other hand are seen as "farm eggs" - and so highly desirable.

It depends on your market, location, etc. Do your due diligence and/or plan to create your own market niche before you invest heavily in anything.

My Australorp is my best layer... of course with only 3 laying hens, 2 of which are bantams, that isn't saying much.

I have 3 black sex links and 2 bahrama's, one year old. I'm getting 3-5 eggs a day. They have the run of a 30'x50' garden in the winter, but a 5'x10' coop and run while I'm growing the garden in the summer.
How long should I expect them to lay eggs?

Hi,

I haven't had any bad experiences with selling EE eggs and I'm not in California! As a matter of fact, I ask MORE for my green eggs since they are such a novelty here (no one has them), and I sell them, too! Here is a sign I made that shows the prices of my eggs:

I just got 4 more EE chicks so I can have some more colored eggs to sell (and since they are the neatest chickens, anyway)!

Back to the subject, my best layers are my RIR's. My BO's also lay well, but my Leghorns aren't the greatest layers.

Well, I stand corrected. It's always like that... say one thing and the woodwork literally erupts with contrary comments.

Apparently, green and blue eggs are the latest fad, the trend of the millenia.

I have 6 buff orpingtons, 2 red stars, 1 black star, 1 australorp, and 1 EE - 11 total. I never get less than 10 eggs per day. Sometimes I even get 12-13 in a day. They all lay lg-jumbo eggs. I really think a lot of it has to do with how they are cared for - lots of room, cleanliness, plenty of clean fresh water, high quality food, and mental stimulation. I have a friend who got her chickens at the same time and place I did and she only gets 2-3 eggs a day at the most out of 10 hens. Her chickens are stuck in a very small, dirty area and are not fed or watered well. Happy hens lay well. Just my 2 cents!

We let our 9 hens freerange over 8,000 square feet of yard and woods. Lots of treats, good food and water. We get 3-7 eggs per day. Best layers are the Barred Rocks (6/week), followed closely by a light-brown leghorn (5-6/week), then the Rhode Island Red (4-6/week). The wyandottes are a bit disappointing (3-5 a week), and the Polish are entertaining but egg-useless (0 per week).
