I teach classes on chickens at the community college. I always tell people how much space they need. I have a handout that clearly spells out the minimum requirements for coops, pens, etc. People don't listen.Wow. I hope someone buys it and moves the chickens into a regular coop and just uses this coop for grow out or broodies or something. So sad.![]()
One of my students contacted me and said he was ready to get chickens because he just bought one of those high dollar Williams-Sonoma coops which claims it will hold 6 chickens.
I asked him what the measurements were since I know all manufacturers grossly overestimate how many they'll hold.
It turns out the coop is less than 16 sq. ft. and the run is under 12. He also wanted to buy some of my Penedesencas which hate confinement and go nuts when people are around. I also discussed that in the class. They don't listen, nor would I sell him birds of any breed unless he added lots more space.
The run would have about 2 sq. ft. per bird. I told him my birds take up 2 sq. ft. standing still.
What are people thinking?
