Hi, I have a free box of canned goods and dry goods for someone in need if you can come get it. I have no phone right now, just email me and I will give you directions.

OK, maybe it's just my suspicious nature...but this strikes me as a "Come into my Parlor," said the spider to the fly sort of thing! Why wouldn't you take it to our local food bank, or maybe a church?

see a lot of that out here...
I think it's actually folks who have *not much* helping those who have *even less*.
not enough money for a phone, but still giving food to someone who needs it. I think it's bible belt thing.

or maybe I just need to crank up my general paranoia a bit.

Why isn't there anything good in my free section like that?

I just got a brand-new quilting frame from my Craigslist two weeks ago. She bought it last year and never even used it, and decided she didn't want it.

Lots of people around here give away food (I have done so myself when I've had extras of something). Many people don't feel like loading the stuff up and hauling it somewhere, it's easier to have someone come and get it. Maybe the giver doesn't even HAVE transportation. I have both gotten and gotten rid of LOTS of stuff thru craigslist, haven't been attacked yet. There are always the flakes who say they will come and get something and then never show. I have received thousands of dollars worth of various building materials, etc from people who just want to get rid of the stuff and are tired of messing with it. I've built 2 chicken coops and a shed so far with free materials and still have enough left over for a third coop, which I'll likely build and sell. Drop the paranoia, use good judgement, and you too may find great things!

My husband used to laugh and call me "the bag lady" when I'd bring home free stuff.... he quit laughing when I brought home a BRAND NEW wheelbarrow with a flat tire (needed air) and a like new patio furniture set (the people got new and didn't want the "old" set anymore). One man's trash is another man's treasure!

its a military thing too. when we move we usually cant pack all the food in the pantry. so we box it up and give to neighbors, friends, food pantry......

That is completely true! The house we live in is on a country road with a wide, unfenced pasture in front that you can pull into with a car if you need to. We put all kinds of things out there with a "FREE" sign on it - things you'd never think would get picked up are gone by that afternoon!

On the flip side a woman my husband works with put a couch out in front of her house with a free sign on it and nobody touched it for a week, so she put a sign on that said "$200 - Inquire at House" and someone "stole" it within an hour!

There's often food offered on our Freecycle. One explanation given was that the person had gotten at the food bank, but that the food was things her kids didn't like, so she was passing it on. I suppose if you returned it to the food bank, they'd be hesitant to give more next time.

Our CL had 'would stove' listed today.
