The coloration of a Striped Skunk can vary widely, I have one that comes around with only the double stripe on his head and the rest is all black.

Skunks only stink if they have recently sprayed, usually they only have a musky odor not unlike a Ferret. And no they are no longer classed with Weasels, mink and all the others in that family. They now have a classification all their own.

"Historically, skunks have also been included in Mustelidae, but genetic analyses suggest that they belong to a separate family of their own (Mephitidae)."

People do drop off their animals. They get tired of them and take them to an area they figure either a good hearted person will find them or they can fend for themselves and if a predator gets them, oh well. It happens a lot. A friend told me that he had heard in a local donut shop where he goes every morning, about some one dropping off skunks in my neighborhood. At that same time I was seeing 2/3 skunks in my yard every night. I caught 13 skunks over a 2 week period. One of the skunks was attempting to get into my chicks run.
