Oh man, this is sooo dangerous!

Chickerdoodle13 - Is a really nice caring person and I think would make a fine Vet! Just because someone does care about the throw away animals does not make them uncompatable with that profession! It makes them human and a better Vet than someone who is so clinically minded that they have no space for compation! As for the Joking - we have a great sence of humour on BYC!

Oes -
Thanks Oes!

I very deeply care for animals. I get very attached to any of the clinical cases I see and it hurts to find out they have to be put down. I've had to put down chickens before and while I get better at doing it, it never gets easier emotionally. Vets need to have a combination of caring, compassion, and a sense of humor. We may not show it when we are seeing clients and patients, but definitely among our peers we show it very much so! (Most medical professionals, whether human or for animals have a sense of humor behind the scenes! I've worked both sides and it helps to get you through the worst days!)

Yeah I am with you on that one having worked for years in the youth service and then years in the Ambulance service. It is black humour that keeps one going and often stops one throwing up! lol :) You will make a fine Vet so keep going on that one !

Whenever any of the animal rescue groups are at the local TSC, Pet Smart or any other store I stay away. Once at TSC as I was looking at the dogs, a large male pit bull was sitting forlornly in his cage. He looked at me and 'came alive'. He was battering the cage with his tail and shaking his body with total focus on me. The people with the rescue could not get over his reaction, "He never reacts to anyone. Does he know you?" I don't know if I reminded him of a previous owner. I do know that I had to fight to make myself walk away from him. I hope that someone gave him a home.

Aww! That would have been so difficult for me also!

I would love to adopt a normally difficult to adopt type of dog. I have such a big soft spot for the animals people find "ugly".

Pit Bulls are banned here because of their aggressive nature - some breeds I wouldn't even touch no matter how cute they "looked!"
I think it does take a certain type of owner to take really difficult dogs. Having had to work with a food aggressive Old English before I know it is no easy task.

My boy now is just a big fur ball - hard to take him seriously - having a big fluffy cloud chasing you isn't exactly worrying! Not like a pit bull! - lol

( This one was not a rescue though his mum was all Ireland champ! ) Don't think the genetics passed down though!

He's adorable! Our neighbor had an OES mix that looked mostly OES. He was gorgeous! He was a rescue though, and was quite shy especially around males. He was a great buddy for our dog though! My dog used to get so excited when he saw the neighbor's car in the driveway (She didn't live there full time). Unfortunately, he passed away a couple of years ago unexpectedly :-(

Well My first OES was X wolfhound and you can't get bigger than that! All my OES dogs have been rescues except this one. I figured after all the rescue dogs I deserved a good one! lol ! :)
(this good one ate my washing machine and caravan! NOT SO GOOD AFTER ALL! !!!)
A lot of folk don't like KC reg dogs because they think they are prone to diseases etc. But Mutts are never monitored and so a lot of issues with rescues and generally x bred dogs are not monitored unlike those with controled breed programmes. At least there is a chance of breeding out things like Aggressive tendency or cancers etc. I lost my last dog through Canine malignant cancer that arises from the connective tissues of the body, a hemangiosarcoma . It was very sudden upsetting and I know that through good breeding it could have been avoided. I later found out that the breeder knew of this in the bloodline of that particular dog and still breed through that bloodline. So many folk just put Mutts to mutts and really don't have any idea what is in their bloodlines at all. This is never recorded and so a comparision between controled and uncontroled breeding is difficult to establish. My first OES x Wolfhound also died of cancer Mammary cancer that spread to the Heart and lungs ( She was spayed) . She was 16 yrs old but the last Oes I had was only just 7 yrs old.

I managed to escape vet school without adopting animals. But I had a diabetic cat throughout school, so I didn't have time for any other animals. Don't do it. You will not have time for a pack of animals as school proceeds.

It has been after school I got a lot of unwanted animals. Oddly, they always seem to not need my services, but those of a specialist. Exhibit a: the horse that needed $4k worth of work on her eye, and is now unrideable because of a neurologic disease. Exhibit b: the cat that needed bilateral patella surgery. And it goes on.

I have an absolutely morbid sense of humor. It's what makes the stupid people tolerable and the rotten situations manageable.

Hehe, I do realize that a pack of animals would never fly if I ever wanted to return home again! LOL I'm pretty sure I will be relying on my parents for a place to live right after graduation!

Right now I have the easiest pet in the world to care for. Just a single crested gecko! I'm pretty content with her, at least during the first part of this year with the crazy anatomy course. After block one, classes are a bit more "tame"! Mostly I'm looking forward to having time to volunteer though. We've gotten emails about so many amazing opportunities already. Unfortunately for right now, studying is taking over my life! Next block is cell bio which I cannot wait for! (That was what I got my undergrad in so it should be much more familiar)
