To answer your question on how to tell male from female BRs...Males have broader white bars so looks like white with black bars...Females have broader black bars so they look black with white. Also as chicks females have a definite darker shading up the front of their legs(at least in my experience). Here is a pic, not very good though of my male Raoul and his past lady(RIP Bess)...
