Oh, My Bad!

To me, the right thing to do is not to feed their delusional sense of entitlement, no matter what type relationship you want with them. JMHO. You did them a HUGE favor and they are just darn lucky to get their dog back; you know, the dog they really don't seem to care about? It would be the last favor I'd do for them. I've already crossed that last bridge with one neighbor. Next time, I'm burning the bridge. I'd hate to think the "friendship" was dependent on allowing their dog to kill my birds, you know?

I would no longer accept phone calls, and if the neighbor comes over, ask them to leave your property. Dog comes back get to the gun faster. I'm mad FOR you.

If my dog ever went to the neighbors yard and killed, and that neighbor took it to the pound, I would be shocked! I think you did a very generous thing. You could have shot it, you had every right to. I would be coming to your house and kissing butt if I were them!! Offering to replace what my dog took PLUS some! Good grief Charlie Brown.

Those are the kind of people, that had the situation been reversed, they would be suing you for mental trauma plus replacement value of the chickens, etc. Next time the conversation comes up, shoot the dog and save them the money! They have been warned.

Well it was nice of you to give it to AC.The neighbors are just ticked about the money. I think I would have responded with," Oh OK then if your dog comes in my yard again I will just shoot it,and you can come by when you get home from work to pick up the body!"

I doubt there will be a next time though.I would probably give the dog to AC over and over. They can use the extra cash.

Thank you all for the responses. I got a good laugh and it was much needed.

I love BYC.

Next time the dog comes around I would call the AC again. I've found that sometimes the best and only way to get someone's attention is to cost them money. If you shoot the dog you might have a legal mess with the way these people are. Can't go to court over calling the AC. Just throwin' that out there.

I like the idea someone had with the note put on the dogs collar. From the dogs point of view, something like, 'I just had a talk with our neighbors again, they say if I come back into their yard after their chickens I won't be coming back home. Why do you let me go over there then. Don't you want me'?

I think that's a fantastic way of handling the problem.

I would apologize and promise not to call animal control the next time that it happens. But if it does then they will need to properly dispose of the carcass. I have no issues with my neighbors and doubt if I ever would as I walk our compound with rifles or shotguns quite often.
