I heard they have great tasting meat.

O.K . I'm finding wethers but at about $250ea. cgjsmith, are your babydolls X's ? I think you found a fab. deal if you've found them for $50ea. You don't happen to want to share where you got such a great deal on those babydolls ? Can you send pic's of yours? I'm still trying to convince my DH that we want them instead of geese.

See what happens is I asked right now in the groups for more sheep, which is the best of time to find weathers because lambing is about to start so everyones trying to get rid of last years stock. Only one of the weathers is a cross the other three are pure bred. Like I said join the groups and just let everyone know your intrested. There are several people who will be trying to get rid of new weathers around july as well. the groups are also a great place to get picturesLOL True babydolls arn't a meat breed because they are minitures (southdowns are though) most registered babydolls are raised for mowing and collecting (thus there high price) I'm having mine shipped in though so it will round out to be closer to $125 when i finally get them

Where aer you located? there are several breeder lists that can help find someone in your area. http://www.nebraskasheep.com/directory/Breeds/Babydoll_Southdown/

Here is chocolet and 'Nella, Nella unfortunatly passed away last month due to a hernia A very hard lesson for me to learn. The person from whom I bought him from castrated him wrong. He was due for surgery two weeks after he died
All my babies are wonderful, they come running up to you when you walk up to the fence. and that is a funny sight!! C

Sweet sheep, chjsmith! They are lovely.

Thanks for all the info. I will have to keep checking for them. I did find some sites around here, Indiana, that you could place a free ad for "sale" or "wanted" on babydolls. I haven't quite convinced DH that a babydoll sheep won't be too much trouble to add to our household. If not this year maybe next.

I won't give up quite yet.
Q: Is that a doghouse in the pen for them to shelter in? Thanks again for all the great info. Sorry to hear about Nella. That is something I will have to consider, .. . . large animal vet bills.

CGJ- Where are you in middle TN? I've been researching babydoll sheep for a couple of years and plan on getting some in about five years. Are you developing a breeding program? The closest breeders I know of are in Ohio and Atlanta. I was really hoping to find someone closer that might have a breeding male that I could use (rent?). And I'd love to get my initial girls from someone local so I don't have to ship them. I'd rather pick the lambs up.
I'm in Murfreesboro. I've heard rumors of a lady north of Nashville that also has a small herd of babydolls. Dunno though.

What color are you getting? The white ones are sweet, but the chocolate lambs are pretty darn adorable too. If you get lambs you HAVE to post pics. THey are the cutest little things ever! I am so jealous! I want some right now, but need a few years to fence, build a bar, get ready, etc.

Good luck!

I'm in Lynchburg, we actually got our first sheep in july (chocolet and nella, when Nella died I asked aroundfo a friend ends up I am getting some from PA (two sets). BDSheep are soo much easier then goats because well they can't jump 8 feet in the air or get out of a hole the size of a dinner plate. ugg. While I have a barn my sheep don't stay in it. mainly they need a large shelter. Theres a guy outside of chattanooga that breeds them. Personally I know people from the boards that live on the coast where i will probably get my sheep from, there are several in KY, The vet bills arn't bad I wouldn't have had to have true surgery just bindin the testicals. When you go look for sheep look at two major things, 1) make sure the sheep have pellet poopies. Anything weird going on is a big sign saying somethings not right and 2) get all the records you can, last time wormed last time hooves trimmed, what shots when. ect. This summer we are putting the sheep in my brother in law/neighbor yard with a couple of strings of electric fencing and a skid house. It should be a great deal so that he doesn't have to mow (oh sorry he doesn't do anything so my hubby won't have to mow) and my babies will get some more greens.

Oops! Just re-read my post. That would be build a BARN, not build a bar. HeHeHeHe. It's a big sheep party. Whoohoo!

Are you getting just ewes from PA or are you getting a breeding pair? If I understood correctly, your current sheep are wethers, right?

Which boards are good? I've found a couple of places when doing a google search, but I don't know which ones are reputable. I'd love to lurk on a sheep board like this one just so I can learn a little more before I actually get them.

Do you have contact info for the guy in Chattanooga? Is he a reputable guy? I've only found people through googled websites. The closest real contact I've found was outside of Atlanta.

My neighbor raises full size sheep and they are all lambing right now. The lambs are about the sweetest things ever. It looks like all of his have twinned as well. Cute, cute, cute! Are you getting lambs or grown sheep?

I really appreciate your info! I'm excited for you.

Thanks again, Crystal. I am going to try and visit one of the people who have BD's here in Inidiana. That might encourage my DH into getting a BD or two in the next year or so.

I'm willing to buy wethers or older sheep. We won't want more than 2 or three on our property. I need to do some research on how to take care of sheep. I have a new friend who has full size sheep & we stopped by to see her lamb triplets. CUUUTTTEE! They lambed in Jan. of all things so it was pretty cold when we went out to see them. They were about 2 wks old and bouncing around as if it wasn't winter. Whew!! They have had sheep for years so I am sure she would be willing to give me some good advise. She is learning to spin wool also sooooo I will have to ask her if she has ever heard of Babydolls. Enjoy your new Babydolls Crystal!

Send pictures and let us all know how they are doing. I will have to be patient and do first things first . . . . renovate the big shed and do some sheep research. I like to do things backwards . . . . get the critter first then go crazy trying to set things up for them.

I will be good, yep!
