Oh! My poor babies... :( (UPDATE:They're both gone :( )

Oh no!

My hen was attcaked & left for dead, she was bleeding in 3 places. I cleaned the wounds, yes she let me know it hurt but she still had her eyes shut, she was cold & full of dirt too. I put the stop bleeding gel on her wounds & then when the bleeding stopped I put on neosporin. You can use flour too.

I gave her terramycin & electrolytes in the water, using an eye dropper to keep her hydrated. I cooked up oatmeal & gave her that too on my finger. Her eyes were still shut. I had her wrapped in towels & under heat lamps. She laid like that for a few days, & when she was able to get up, she acted like a person that had a stroke. It did something to her equalibrium I think. Her beak didn't work very well for a couple of weeks & I had to help her eat things. Yogurt is good too, strawberry they really like. It has been 6 weeks now & she is 100%....so my point is, there is hope.

I am sorry for you & the chickies. Just take care of them & if they are are fighters, they will get over it. Shock plays a big factor in it too. Keep letting them know you are there, I think that helped my Hazel, just hearing my voice, since she wouldn't open her eyes.

Please keep us posted....especially me...

Good luck!

I would swab them down with polysporin ointment...including over their eyes. It's amazing how quickly they heal if you keep it moist with polysporin. Just keep them quiet in a warm place with food and water...maybe put a little bit of sugar in their water. Not much...just enough to boost their energy a bit. Probably wouldn't hurt to put some vitamin drops...poly-vi-sol in their water also.

DON'T use any ointment with pain killer...it can kill them.

Chiknmama is coming to visit, and she said she would stop at the feed store and get some antibiotics for me. I think that infection would probably be the biggest worry right now, other than the one that won't open it's eyes. The blood is on it's eyes, like that's where the hen had pecked it? Idk, but it is standing upright, which is better than the one with the scalped head. It is moving around, but not standing upright.

I will keep everyone posted on how the little guys are doing. Thanks for the help and concern.

Well the two with injuries are still alive, but the one that wouldn't open it's eyes still won't. I was cleaning it's face, and noticed that the back of it's head is damaged as well. One of it's eyes is swollen pretty bad, but the other is just shut.

The other baby that got pecked in the eye is starting to ooze clear fluid from it a bit, so I figure that the eye is gone. That is the one with the skull showing. It now looks like the skin is just sliding off it's head..

I got some electrolytes and antibiotics for them, and dipped there beaks a few times. I don't want to leave water in there, for fear of the one that can't see right now falling in a drowning. Plus the other one still isn't getting around very well. It can walk, but it doesn't stand all the way up.

Hopefully they will make it to morning, but I'm afraid they might need to be culled anyway. I hope not!! I sure wouldn't be able to do it, I cried my eyes out when I saw the poor things laying, bloody, on the ground.

How can I get them to eat? I think the one with a good eye is, but the other can't see, so it's not pecking or anything. Are the electrolytes enough for now? They are the Durvet brand vitamin & electrolytes powder. Maybe I could add some sugar to the water as well, to give them some extra carbs? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Shelley,

You're doing all the right things! You'll be surprised by how resilient these little chicks are. So many people here on BYC have had chickens get scalped, lose eyes & limbs, and have bones protrude - many with happy endings.

Try giving each chick some food & water individually by hand. You might want to try a mash made by wetting chick crumbles. Be careful when giving them water, as it's easy for them to aspirate the water into their lungs.

Hang in there. We're all supporting you from the other side of the internet.

jenn.
