Oh No Fly's Fly's Fly's !

I might try the Golden Malrin . Is it ok if the chicken eat a dead fly that has eaten it?

Pam

I would not let the chickens eat anything that died from being exposed to the Golden Malrin. If it killed the fly, it worked. If it worked, it's probably still in the fly, in whatever amount, so probably not a good idea for the chicken(s) to ingest that. I don't have any experience to back that up, fortunately, but if there's any question as to "ok" or "not ok", I would err on the side of caution.

From what I understand, Golden Malrin contains methomyl See: http://www.afpmb.org/sites/default/...s/msds/6840-01-183-7244_msds_goldenmalrin.pdf and according to wiki, methmyl is toxic to humans. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methomyl

So always use disposable, plastic/rubber gloves when handling, use disposable plastic containers, don't touch it, don't taste it and don't let anything that you want to keep living do so either.
Thanks Teery.

Here's some proof (just some) that the fly traps work effectively. And, yes, they DO stink. That's the point. These were hung on the 18th of August. You do the math. It's ALMOST time to dump them into the garbage. I do that WHEN the fly activity ceases.

I make fly traps out of pickle jars. I put a few holes in the top, stick in a couple pieces of bread, add about a can of beer (usually crappy beer that we have left over from guests). Set it in the sun near anywhere there are flies. It works great. I empty out the jars when they're full and then repeat.

Crappy beer? Never drank any. LOL. But your pickle jar idea will work. I will use my sweet pickle jar after I've eaten ALL of the pickles with my hamburgers. Hope my cardiologist doesn't read this! The bread is the new ingredient to me. Great idea. Works out to about the SAME cost--fly traps vs beer, bread, & pickles. I like your idea BEST.

You do pour the pickle juice out first though. I did this same idea with an empty spaghetti sauce jar, but the pickle jar caught more flies faster.

And yeah, beer like natty ice...

Johari, LOL, so are you saying you buy crappy beer for your guest or they bring crappy beer and leave it at your house?

I have had chickens at my place since 1993 ( I always have around 30 chickens and I have two ducks) and I would always get comments from family/friends/workers etc. I can't believe you don't have flies. I do work at keeping things as clean as possible too. Well they can't say that this year. They are thick as thieves.

I think in my neck of the woods I think it has something to do with the wet spring and early summer.

I do get a kick out of watching Harley my female duck run around and try to catch them, believe it or not she can be successful at it.

Our guests usually bring crappy beer and leave it. Lol. My husband and I tend to only buy microbrewed beer from a brewery back home. We're beer snobs, lol.
