Oh No ! Not My Julia ( She's OK today...)

Hi there. I have included a couple of photos of my leucistic mallard showing the injuries she received from a larger duck. The one with the raw back shows what she looked like when I got her, the one with the scab on her face is another injury she received before I realized that I had a male and a female, not 2 females together. I kept her inside in a rabbit cage until she recovered and grew new feathers but both times bounced back. Don't give up hope! Good luck.

Thanks for the messages - Julia is still with me, she won't leave her nest box ( it is quite large ), maybe through fear or that she feels safe and comfortable there - she is still eating a little so that is a good sign! She has plenty of water also.

The pictures posted could have come from Julia - she has a raw back, head injuries and around her eyes but she can see me so for that I am thankful!

I an still reluctant to remove her from her box as she seems happy there - am I doing the right thing or should I lift her out in the hope that she will get some exercise? She does waddle about in the box but obviously it isn't a proper run - I dare not put her outside for fear of any of the geese attacking her again - I couldn't find one of her Sister's this morning - I was hunting high and low and finally I found her IN Julia's box...... - how she managed to get there I do not know as all of my Muscovy girls now have their wings clipped - she was laying beside her - it was touching - all her family still surround her box at night when they come in - amazing and it makes me think that my animals are more sensitive than my family at times!

Thanks for listening!

I would say, let her rest if she wants to rest. When she's ready to be active, she'll let you know. In the mean time, healing is hard work. You're doing great by her--I'm glad to hear she's still doing well.

You have given me hope that Julia will survive - thank you for sharing the images of your duck!

I hope she lives a long and happy life with you!

Our goose practically skinned our young pair of mallard drakes. their backs were literally Completely red and had no feathers, and were oozing blood. both healed, and I was really surprised that they ended up being totally fine. I have high hopes for your Julia.

You are most welcome. I have to tell you that the one of her head injury was taken a few days after the attack. The first couple of days it looked much worse. Like raw hamburger. But Metacam for the first couple of days for pain relief and Baytril as an antibiotic along with cage rest did the trick. I don't think you have to worry about her not having any exercise at the moment. Have to weigh the benefits of her not sustaining another injury. Can't remember exactly how long it took before I started to see feather regrowth but it wasn't long. A bit of hard boiled egg as extra protein can't hurt.

Good luck to Julia, it sounds like she's going to be fine.

I have a question about housing geese and ducks together. I'm considering getting two female pilgrims in the spring and I was planning to house them with my 6 ducks. My question is was it the drakes that attacked Julia or was it females also?

The concern I have is for next spring - if I go ahead and get the geese females will they start attacking the ducks during breeding season?

Sorry to but in on your post but my dog took a lump out of my call ducks chest a week ago and the vet had to stitch him up, I could see into his chest.I have kept him all in week feed him with a syringe and he has healed great, the wound was much worse than the pictures on this post the hole was about 1 and a half inches round and I could see his heart beating in the hole so I am sure Julia will be fine just keep her warm I even brought in a tray of mud for him to root around in ,my question is how long did it take your mallards to be back to normal my poor little fella is still very quite and dosent want to swim when i put him in the sink but he is eating on his own again ,sorry again for butting in on your post but I never thought my duck would heal so Julia will make it I am sure thinking of you
