Oh so many questions...new to this

Oh I sure hope she isn't a cockerel! Her white spot is pretty concentrated on her head, and there is darkness that is patchy down the front of her legs, so I was thinking pullet. I was going to wait a week or so for the "let's guess the sex" game. She/he seem very laid back. It is confusing with her though because she has tufts of white here and there, but her head spot is defined and her legs are darker. Here are some closer pictures of the BR:

In your pics, they do seem to be close together...are they always like that, or do they spread out and wander sometimes?

They wander most of the time. They eat and drink on the other side of the brooder, and huddle under the light basically to sleep. I just happened to take pictures of them when they were all cornered. Maybe I'll bump up the temp to be sure.

I have another question!

The ladies (that is what I am calling them to give myself some good pullet karma) have been trying to fly around the brooder all day now. They are only a week old, but have some pretty good feathers on their wings. Should I worry about them getting out yet, or should I wait to put a mesh cover on top of it? There is about 14 inches...maybe 16 between the bedding and the top.

Go get yourself a copy of Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow. Amazon sells it in paperback and in Kindle format, and it is the single best chicken primer I have found to date. Get a copy, and you will refer to it over and over...

Actually, that band of "frosting" around the back of the head, plus the legs with almost no dark wash down the fronts usually does mean a cockerel. Her head spot is in two parts, the smaller spot, plus the "frosting". I hope it is a girl, though! Some spots are a bit harder to call. See this picture? Those are all cockerels and one, the second from the left, has a spot just like yours, in two parts. I'll be happy to be wrong!

I guess we'll hope for the best, but I think you are right.
