oh what not to feed!

Beans are just fine. Chickens have no trouble digesting any kind of bean. Potato skins are also fine UNLESS they're green. Don't feed anything green potato skins or green potato flesh! The chemical (solanine) which makes deadly nightshade deadly gets concentrated in potato skins when they're exposed to sunlight. Potatoes are in the same Solanum family as tomatoes, nightshade, eggplant and bittersweet.

In fact, they'll eat stuff we wouldn't touch, like slugs, toads, mice and centipedes!

You don't eat slugs?

My girls get lots of fruit and I have been getting 24/30 layers. Tomatoes are fruit and my girls eat them everyday in season and I have never noticed a decline in egg production.

My black australorps have figured out that if they tap on the glass of our back door, I'll usually throw some food out. So today they got uncooked oatmeal, cereal, and an individual serving container of mandarin oranges. The syrup in the oranges threw them for a moment, but I have a really adverturous girl who showed the rest that it was a delicious treat!

As to watermelon on hot summer days ... I'd forgotten a half in the fridge for a couple of days, then didn't want to eat it. Put it in the coop, and an hour later, all that was left was the shell. Left it, they didn't touch it again, and it became a "hat" for a low-growing pine shrub!

My girls also like to snatch peanuts from the goats. They also stole from my millet patch, my tomato plants, and everything else I didn't put high enough. THIS year, my garden is getting fenced!

The blackies will eat anything I give them. The eggers ... they refuse to eat my cooked oatmeal with pumpkin. Thinking about separating it next time!

Raisins!!! And also just regular bread as a treat. Mine love yogurt. On cold mornings I make them cooked oatmeal with mashed bananas and peanut butter and this is a HUGE hit.
